That’s just a fact; a fact he had known right from the moment he was asked (ordered) to. Still, his wants have so rarely matched what he must do, that they barely register anymore; they don’t matter after all. Go back to the mansion, continue the family line, carry on with the Suwa legacy--

The sooner he comes to terms with what he must do, the better. But as he sits at the table, slowly and methodically eating the birthday banquet that Kazuki and Miri prepared for him--

“I might have a job for you, if you're interested in more than scraps,” the man tells him, producing a card from the inner pocket of his coat and placing it on the table, sliding it in Kazuki’s direction. “Tomorrow, 10 o’clock.”
If he expects Kazuki to reach for the card right away, he’s going to be disappointed, the teen thinks darkly. He is curious, but he’s not about to show it and the man chuckles once more, eyes alight with amusement. He taps the card once as he stands up and then turns on his heel, waving goodbye as he leaves. Kazuki waits until the man disappears through the door before finally reaching for the card.
It’s a regular business card, although Kazuki doesn’t think cafes’ owners usually have those. It must be a front for something, the mafia most likely and isn’t that interesting?
Kazuki is thirteen when he gets an offer to start working for the organization. It goes from there

A consistent tactic: answer a question with a question.
“I’ve come to see my son.” The older Suwa man laces his fingers together before putting them atop of his knees, looking at the hitman with indifference.
It’s the exact expression that Kazuki has seen on his partner one too many times.
“He isn’t here,” Kazuki replies, venom coating his words, hostility curling at the end of his sentence.
“It seems so.” Suwa looks the blond up and down, taking in his outfit. “But you are.”

Suwa Shigeki pays a visit to his son’s apartment.
It’s not Rei he comes into contact with, rather his wayward puppy.
Either way, it seems a warning is overdue.

"Where's Kazuki-papa?"
Of all the questions she could ask first thing in the morning, Rei isn't expecting that.

Rei hesitated in the doorway.
Kazuki blinked. “Everything okay?”
Rei’s fingers curled into his palm. “I… can’t sleep.”
Kazuki nodded, understanding immediately. “You want the couch? I’ll—”
“No,” Rei said, sharper than he meant. Then softer: “I want to stay. Here. If that’s okay.”
“Uh, sure”. Kazuki began to move, legs swinging off the bed. “I’ll go sleep on the couch—”
“No.” Rei stepped forward. His voice was hoarse. “I— I meant with you.”
Kazuki froze mid-motion. Silence stretched between them for what seemed like an eternity.
“…huh?”
Rei and Kazuki left the organization for good. And Rei should be able to sleep in his own bed. He should be able to sleep like everyone else, like a normal human being.
Kazuki graciously lends his own bed (and his body heat on cold winter nights).
Kazuki narrows his eyes and steps over the package to look down the hall, first on the right and then on the left. It's predictably empty, the elevator silent. Whoever left it for them must have dashed right after ringing, which doesn't bode well.
He pauses momentarily to wrap the dishcloth around his hand, picking up the envelope cautiously. If it's coated with something he'd rather have gloves, but if it's dangerous he doesn't want to bring it into the apartment.
The envelope contains a single photograph. It's of Miri, at the park on the slides. Kazuki can feel his heartbeat pounding furiously in his chest, so loud he can imagine the sound it's making vibrating down the hall. His sight narrows down to her laughing face, slightly blurry but completely recognizable. He turns it over.
