Brad Thor has surpassed all his previous masterpieces with this brilliant, informative, exotic, deadly tale. It’s main villains in focus are terrorists and Russians. Here Russians have good intentions but they are selfish and affect the Americans in a bad way which calls for an extreme action in the form of Harvath. After starring 14 books and featuring in another, he returns trying to accommodate to the after affects of 2015’s Code of Conduct which has changed him and Lara. Though Harvath still works for the Carlton Group, he’s planning to move to Boston to be with Lara which may affect his work. The private intelligence group he works for is once again contracted to save the day and avenge a few tragedies. Being an ex SEAL and an ex President’s watchdog, he still sees himself as a sheepdog-protecting the sheep from the wolves. Unfortunately, in this book he is so busy traveling around the world, that he forgets to go to his amazing home-Bishop’s Gate. But on an overall look, it has a happy and a perfect ending which is too patriotic. 

   Harvath starts off fighting terror in Europe, courtesy of the CIA but when a CIA team trying to abduct a major target is destroyed, Harvath is called to look into it. After all, it was intel from his source which had started the failed mission in the first place. Finding his source dead, Harvath chases clues. 

   But on the other side, a Russian GRU agent-Baseyev, has been implanted deep inside the heart of modern evil. He’s a product of a serious tragedy and lives for only one purpose-to kill, and he doesn’t care what damage he causes to the good people along the way. 

Though plotwise this is the 3rd Rapp novel due to the two prequels which came in 2010&2011(American Assassin and Kill Shot) which established his origins, Transfer of Power was the first book which introduced Mitch Rapp to the world. Being Flynn’s second intense political thriller following Term Limits(which established the universe that Rapp enters here), both are very relevant politically, philosophically, ethically-today and till the end of democracy. Being released in 1999, it was way ahead of its time and is very interesting even in today’s fast-paced, action packed environment in thriller lit. This is not just due to it’s extreme realism setting with a keen eye for detail, but it’s due to its blazing political&intelligence standoff which is done with intense emotional tension in the narrative. The action is very less and realistic when compared to the extreme scenes in the works of Matthew Reilly and James Rollins, but Flynn has created his masterpiece here with a unique tension in the narrative that makes you feel like you are on the scene with an extremely detailed setting. It’s reasonable that some of the details in the White House’s inner secrets have been changed for national security. There have been two cheap knockoffs of this book in the form of movies like White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen, both which can’t even be compared to awesomeness of Flynn’s plot and narrative. 

   The book starts with an operation in Iraq to abduct a terror mastermind. Rapp is shown being undercover as a beggar outside the target’s house for weeks and is met by SEAL Team Six. The operation which has Presidential authorization is supervised at Langley. It goes off smoothly and the target, when interrogated with the use of chemicals, reveals a plot to capture the White House by his allies. Fortunately Rapp and the CIA are just in time to alert the Secret Service who safely secure POTUS in a bunker. But Rafique Aziz and twenty of his men have over a hundred hostages and the White House rigged and ready to blow. 

   Now the cowardly politicians who are left in charge reject the military and the intelligence’s demands to raid the building due to chances of failure which will give them bad PR. They try to negotiate which at 1st gets people killed, then secures some hostages. The CIA who through interrogating their newly abducted prize know Aziz’z demands, which will affect Israel in a bad way and profit Iraq. The cowardly Vice Prez-Baxter, who is poisoned in his ear by his Chief of Staff-Dallas King, plans to let the Prez die as that way he can get the throne. The pentagon is fighting for authorization of a raid as they know that Aziz has brought an Iraqi bank robber to drill the bunker and get the Prez. 

   Now Mitch Rapp is sent to infiltrate the White House through secret tunnels and plant recon cams. He rescues a reporter- Anna Reilly, who, on her first day as the White House Correspondent, from getting raped. He menacingly kills the terrorist who is trying to rape her and slowly builds a budding romance which is paced well and is entertaining. The problem with her being a reporter and Rapp being a government assassin creates many problems in their romance, but she helps Rapp in his mission. 

   The intense political, military and intelligence standoff ups the tension till the brilliantly executed climax which has a highly engaging and explosive scene in Brazil. The suspense about the fate of the villain is kept till the end. 

Solace comes, solace goes;

Solitude visits when needed and not;

Sparring often, never broken;

This my lair, never escaped yet. 

 Limitations lost to gamble at success;

Love and hate comes in cocktails;

Life and death, it’s seen all;

This my lair, broken me not. 

 Avarice and gluttony, its curtailed all;

All’s fair when life goes on;

After all, this I can’t forget;

This my lair, has sure made me whole. 

There is an infinite amount of wonder in the complexities of the machine known as the human being. It is the only naturally occurring, scientifically mechanical construct which is truly sentient. The human intelligence and cognition is multiplying with every succeeding generation. Even in physical terms it is a masterpiece which has adapted to survive every terrain, war, calamity, etc. We not only adapt, but also are the only organism which substantially create changes in our habitat to sustain us in an environment of our choice. Humanity has physically, emotionally, culturally evolved differently in different areas on our planet through history to be one with our local region. We may not be the organism which has the longest lifespan, toughest body, biggest body-size, but we have dominated this planet from millenniums and will do so for many more. Contrary to Darwin, the reason for the human machine reigning supreme is not because of “Survival of the strongest” but is because of “Survival of the smartest.” Let’s not give the whole credit to brains. Its also because we had the strongest willpower and endured the most. 

This electrifying, thundering book introduces Dewey Andreas, a very patriotic yet troubled hero. He was an ex army ranger then Delta. A few tragedies struck him to only temporarily deter him. His young son died of a disease and his wife went into depression. When he was away, she killed herself with Dewey’s handgun and he was arrested for her murder when he found her. Though he was proved innocent in a court, the military whom he heroically served didn’t bother to help him during the trial. So, he disappeared for a few years. Then he found work in oil rigs. 

   The story starts with Dewey being the Chief of Capitana Oil station, owned by Anson Oil, an American oil company. Anson merges with KKB which is America’s biggest energy company, forming the world’s largest energy company. Savage Island Dam owned by KKB explodes in Canada. Then, Capitana gets taken over by Arabs working there. Dewey frees the hundreds of hostages and escapes after the rig explodes from Octanitrocubane. Before that, there is an amazing underwater fight scene at the seabed, below the rig, where Dewey fights hostiles without oxygen. His escape from the seabed and the action that follows are almost superhuman. The fight leads him to Cali, Columbia, where the enemy chopper he has hijacked crashes into a building and he gets shot and chased. 

   The other plots follow the KKB security chief Savoy who helps the inter-agency taskforce to find the villain. He is contacted by Dewey and plans an extraction. But a mole in the taskforce sends two operatives to kill Dewey and the two Deltas sent to extract him. Dewey now flees for his life in a stolen Mercedes from the Colombian cops and goes to Cuba. Savoy hunts down the mole with all KKB resources with his boss who survives an assassination attempt. 

   The villain is just amazingly filthy rich and self made. He is a middle eastern person embedded in the American society who is very brilliant. He profits from the attacks by betting on the competitors wisely and safely. He is very successfully evil yet gets the girls. This Fortuna is like a superlative form of a Bond villain. The final action chase scene between the hero and the villain is one of the best chases in modern fiction. 

Paul Janson is the classiest, funniest, smartest, deadliest hero created by Robert Ludlum. Being a survivor of a past filled with treachery, hardships, pain-both given and taken, violence, - Janson has come out in one piece but not emotionally unscratched. He fought as a SEAL in the Vietnam war until his commander Alan Demarest, sold out his location to the enemy on a mission to test the hero. This ended up in Janson’s capture and torture for 18 months in a VC camp. After many attempts, he actually managed to escape and hand over evidence of Demarest’s war crimes which included torture and slaughter of VC and betraying Janson, to the authorities which led to his execution. Janson then studied business at Cambridge which led him to be recruited to Consular Ops, an intelligence unit in the Ludlum universe. There Janson became a legendary operative earning the name ‘The Machine’, which actually is short for - The Kill Machine. At the age of fifty, feeling sick of the violence he was forced to perform, he left Cons Ops and became a corporate security consultant. 

   This is where the story starts. Janson is asked to repay a debt by rescuing a billionaire/philanthropist who’s now a captive of extremists and is due to be beheaded without any request for a ransom. Peter Novak, the billionaire had once rescued Janson when he was captured in a war torn part of the world, by paying for his release. Also, the people who captured Novak are the very people responsible for bombing an embassy which killed Janson’s wife long ago. The hero quickly assembled an awesome international team of private operatives and successfully managed to rescue the captive, only to get his team and Novak killed when his plane exploded midair. Luckily, Janson wasn’t on that plane. 

   As he begins to hunt for answers, he becomes a target by the very intelligence agencies he once served. Many friends and trusted people turn against him and believe him to be Novak’s killer. Also, the mysterious villain has deposited 6 million dollars in Janson’s account making it look like he was paid to kill Novak. 

   His quest leads him to be repeatedly ambushed by Cons Ops sniper-Jessica Kincaid- who eventually teams up with Janson, only after realizing the deceit on the part of her employers towards her. They together uncover startling revelations about Novak which is nothing compared to the enormous conspiracy involving Novak and the USA which they get to know from the Cons Ops director who asks Janson for help when he meets him. Whats more, the President and many others are involved in this program targeted to create world peace by conning the world. Also, thundering revelations spark up about Demarest. If this conspiracy would be exposed, it would spark a war, causing the world to unite against the US. Janson uses the UN to counter this conspiracy with another conspiracy trying to lure the villain into a trap

Mitch Rapp is a classic, patriotic American hero who leads a very violent life for the greater good. Vince Flynn did a great job creating and developing Rapp for over a decade until Flynn lost the battle to cancer. The Rapp phenomenon inspired many to serve their country in the fight against terror. Kyle Mills who wrote this book, a sequel to The Last Man, has done a brilliant job carrying on the legacy. He has shown Rapp evolving beyond the violent means of interrogation to psychological tricks, showing Rapp trying to give up drinking and smoking in a realization to not follow the footsteps of Stan Hurley-Rapp’s trainer and mentor who dies in style in this book taking out Gould-the man who previously killed Rapp’s wife. Rapp is seen trying to rebuild his life and home to regain a sense of normalcy in the midst of the crises the CIA faces. 

   The plot is about the CIA and the ISI racing to get their hands on files made by Rickman-a traitor to the CIA who though got killed by Rapp in The Last Man, made sure the compromising files about the CIA secrets would get leaked out one by one over time, eventually destroying the agency. This situation is worsened by an evil senator-Ferris, who is working with the ISI and wants the CIA destroyed, to remake it the way the ISI wants as he is funded by them. As each file gets leaked out by an unknown party, Rapp races to protect the men his agency has in other international intelligence agencies. He fails sometimes. Scott Coleman and his ex-SEAL team aid Rapp throughout the book in every major operation. Gould, who almost can be called as Rapp’s nemesis tricks Rapp and betrays him leading to a failed operation in the middle. 

   Mills uses every major character in the series-Kennedy, Nash, Hurley, Coleman, Dumond, and others aptly and creates one of the best books in the series. This book can be read and understood easily even if you haven’t read any of the prequels. 

   Many things can be said about a man like Jack Reacher-A vigilante, a hero, a lawless savage, a savior, or an indestructible detective who goes to any length to find the truth he sets his sights for. But at the end of the day, he’s just a mythical man with uncanny luck we all wish we had. Reacher is neither an assassin like Bourne or Rapp nor does he have the kind of training they had. But he comes out almost unscratched out of every deadly thrilling fray. A special feature about Reacher that the movie fails to cover is that he goes over the scenario of the fight before the action actually occurs. This way, he plans and is ready for anything tactically. The thing that makes him such a lovable hero by both men and women is not just his tactical brilliance but also his morality. Though he lives like a nomad, traveling around America, he rights all the wrongs that comes along his way. He has rules and helps people in a fix. Even from his days as a military cop, he was doing what’s right and not what’s legal. In this book, Reacher does a lot like brutally injure an assassin in self defense, execute a mobster in style to get his men off his tail, kill thugs who terrorize a peaceful home and finally kill everyone involved in a dark conspiracy in a small remote town. Throughout his killing spree, he has the support of an ex-FBI-turned P.I who is the heroine and a journalist who finances Reacher. The part where the cops or any law enforcement agencies try to go after Reacher for his violence(though justified) isn’t mentioned anywhere. 

   Make Me starts with the villains killing and moving the body of the heroine’s friend. Reacher out of a coincidence gets off a train at that very remote town called Mother’s Rest. Everyone there except the P.I are against him with pure rage as he goes on investigating the reason for the town’s name. When they search the heroine’s friend-Keever’s(who’s dead) room in the motel, they find a note on two hundred deaths and a phone number. They then investigate around the country to find Keever’s client and what they were investigating in the small town. On this journey they are tailed and hunted by an assassin working for a national level henchmen organization hired by the nameless leader of the town. It’s annoying how the assassin comes close but misses many times and drags the story. In every fifty pages, the spoilers for the suspense, that is, what exactly is going on in Mother’s Rest with the two hundred deaths, keep on changing. The truth hits you bloodily just around twenty five pages before the end.

 Normally, my manners would surely seem lost,

Yet when I indulge in you, I can only boast.

 Through thick and thin did I survive to be with you,

Yet you act like we’ve never been apart like a few.

 So, you’re surely made up of every shade of gray,

Beyond realm of mortals it lied,

The island of paradise where only the 

Worthy are presented entrance forever;

There did I rule and will rule in service 

Of none but me, not lonely in solitude

But peaceful and wrathful with 

Judgmental eyes do I gloat and boast to

None as none care in this dolent plane;

Beyond fears and humanity do I serve

Myself with the fullest pleasure to heed my

Own words which keep procrastinating 

As I sure am a merry hypocrite to help all

Except the one who really needed it like me;

Self servitude is a life filled with an ego

Her beauty which shone brighter than the morning star.

Her youth’s radiance and knowledge fathomed 

A high mountain which reached beyond the clouds.

Greener than the greenest meadow was she in 

Splendid amazement and high morale which 

Inspired others to follow footsteps which carried 

Secrets too grim to reveal to the outer world

As it would only break hopes and sadden folk

Rather than pity, sympathize one who didn’t want

To receive them in folly. Till the end did thy 

Beauty live without pride and grandeur for having 

Achieved inner beauty beyond all hope with courage

And grace which mattered not where she was headed.

Cancerous pests may feed in all our minds but

They literally were in hers which kept a clock ticking

For only a few days left till judgment which would be 

Bright without blight as she was worthy to walk 

Into the kingdom of heaven without fear of His fury

As she had saved many a people from the path which 

Leads to His fury with unprejudiced wrath.

Everyone has to go from this world eventually 

But she was a beauty gone too early in her youth

While bringing one back to the right path but cancer

Peace isn't just enjoying the times in the absence of war as there are conflicts everywhere at every time, since the beginning of time to the end of time. There can be no true absence of conflicts in any individual’s life but one can learn to accept things, achieve self-satisfaction if he’s content with the way things are or can try to change things for the way he wants it to be which isn’t always successful. There will always be situations which threaten our peace and mean to throw us into the midst of chaos. How we handle those situations and steer us back into an orderly peaceful path truly defines us. Some in our society truly care about us but most don’t and they criticize our work and actions. It is our duty to not destroy our own peace due to it and maintain it despite of the negative comments and ignorance found in our society. Though we must defeat all obstacles to finally find our peace, others’ peace must not be hindered in the process. No man is completely at peace or is completely lost from the path to peace. 

   Though some people say ignorance is bliss, it really isn’t as curiosity is a result of ignorance which hinders peace. The more we know about something, the better can we analyze the situation, not get bothered by it and finally reach peace through a straight path. Finding peace had spiked the human curiosity for ages and has many answers from many perspectives. Some of them are discussed below:

Rage sprouts from the hearts of every normal individual which is normal at a certain limit but in today’s world due to the stress and burdens of society, rage explodes in everyone. This has an adverse affect on everyone around them as the things we do in rage ends up resulting in physical and psychological abuse to the people near us whether we care about them or not. Physical wounds and scars heal though unforgivable but psychological wounds leave an unfading scar which affect the victim’s mind and personality permanently. Rage is somewhat like energy as it can neither be created nor destroyed but only be transferred from one person to another. This causes never ending cycles and webs which entangle everyone’s lives in a society. 

A normal human mind is so powerful and magnificent that with just thoughts alone it has the power to create and destroy worlds and lives of people that don’t even exist. Considering that we can say that a writer’s mind is way greater than a normal mind as it has the guts to take this skill to the next level by putting them into words which is one of the oldest and most powerful form of presentation. As all knowledge including ideas must be shared with the rest of humanity and not be within the reach of selfish misers, a writer takes the initiative to publish it and share it with the world not considering the negative criticism or comments. This is an extremely brave task as those who can’t do something, judge people who can do it and mostly judge badly even if its new, good and original as the world isn’t accustomed to change. In this way harsh remarks on one’s hard work effects any normal person on a bad way but a writer has the power to move past judgments and take only the positive stuff as the feeling of completion after a long duration of hard work is its own reward.

Foreverly are we all locked in our hollow prison

Where the mind doesn't flow beyond false hope

Of escape from oppression and prejudice received 

From other cell mates who’d judge and criticize 

Rather than change their own flaws which keep growing.

The very things which make us feel alive also endanger 

Us and too much use of freedom causes us to fear

Risks which puts us back in our uncreative prisons

Filled with gloom, doom and dust which rots our insides 

But we can escape our hollow cells by stepping 

Into the hopeful, bright light of creativity and intelligence

Which when used aptly truly rids us of our prisons.

When in our prison, we and we alone have the key 

To unlock our cell to step out of self imposed despair and 

Unlock our full potential as at the end of the day no 

One but our own doubts are stopping you from 

Reaching your destination outside your prison which is filled with what dreams are made of.

Under a hill over at Bag-end lived a queer little hobbit 

In his tweens door next to the great Bilbo Baggins at the shire,

Marvin was he called and his family ran the tavern at the shire's

Heart, and on one sunny, merry day on which Bilbo disappeared,

He found an egg on the lawn, big enough to be that of a beast's.

 Neither red nor black was it but that of a dark brown hue

Was it and was taken great care of by the boy till it cracked releasing 

A tiny little dragon which secretly grew in size and might with

The boy who escaped the shire with it before Bilbo returned 

From his own adventures with the young dragon's grandfather-Smaug.

 They traveled the whole of middle earth over time and 

Raided abandoned treasures and hoarded them in a deserted 

Fortress near Mirk-wood where they visited regularly and soon 

Gory- Marvin' s dragon discovered his blood connection to

Smaug the magnificent whose treasures were stolen by a hobbit.

 With elves they fought orcs and goblins, all servants of Sauron the 

Dark lord who tried to recruit Gory but miserably failed to the love 

Of a hobbit whose friendship this beast cherished and swore to protect the 

Shire against Sauron when the time came and it eventually did 

As every beast must one day face mightier beasts in the wild world.

 During Frodo's pilgrimage to Mordor to rid the world of 

Mighty Sauron, Marvin and Gory valiantly fought orcs at the

Village of Bree and defended the shire from knowing the evil of the

Real world but after that there were the sweet good days of peace

When they raided Erebor's riches and hoarded it .

 After a few slow years of sulking in their Mirk-wood fortress,

Upon their secret hoard of looted treasure Gory the great 

Wanted it all for himself and tried his best to trick his 

Once friend to leave but complications ensured as a lifelong

Friendship can't be devastated in a day for any reason.

 Gory had the greedy blood of Smaug flowing through his veins 

And all those years of peace time of fighting no evil

Or looting no new treasure had made his mind violent 

And Marvin also grew in his greed and sloth as the silent treasure 

Turned him twisted and wicked in mind and soul.

 The hobbit also grew greedy and tried to trick the dragon to

Find solace away from the treasure but soon the cold war grew

Hot as Marvin a scholar of magic tried to kill Gory and the dragon

Used his might and fire to counter it and soon the castle and all of its treasures were destroyed which benefited none and they sadly returned 

To Erebor and the Shire to live on their remaining days in guilt and shame.
