Dear Self:

You are at an important crossroads in your life. Currently, you are preparing to launch a new chapter as a medical student. You’ve spent all your life chasing this dream to become a physician. At one point, you were willing to give everything – your health, free time, and relationships to achieve your goals. You’ve realized now that there is more to life than just a career. Although, you still feel as passionate as ever to become a physician, you’re asking yourself the bigger question: “Who are you and what do you want in this life?”

And your answer? It may not all be about becoming a doctor! It’s to travel the world, learn about ancient long-forgotten lands, read and write leisurely, drink great wine, and of course, fall deeply in love. You’ve always been so clear-eyed about your goals. Start a homeless shelter, build housing, achieve a medical degree, work for the United Nations, and on and on. However, is there more to life than just public service? As the motto of your city’s crest reads: the highest good?

Here's my 2:18 AM, tired-eyed iota of wisdom for you. It’s worth it. Chase your dreams. Be clear about your intentions. Reach the moon and grab the stars if that’s what you feel you need to do. However, remember your why. Never forget your why. And your why? Why do you work so hard? It’s for all the people in your life that poured love into your soul. It’s for all those that have opened doors you never opened and have swept floors you walked on but never swept. You carry with you their dreams. You are the first Arceo in America to become a physician. You are the bearer of dreams, the hopes of your parents, and the justice of those that faced injustice following their dreams, too.

In the process of achieving your dreams, remember your values. Be kind. Show compassion to strangers and show even greater compassion to your loved ones. Listen before speaking. Be gentle yet firm. Be an instrument of peace. God has given you a vision for your life for a reason. It’s not because you are meant to be some sacrifice for the public good. It is because these are the dreams that you have dreamed. This is who you are, and yes, you are drawn to an ephemeral sunset and a romantic night under the stars too, but deep to your bones, you have always been called to the mission of medicine.

So, find adventure in your journey, grow abundantly, and never cease to joyfully achieve your mark within medicine and the world at large. I am writing this letter so that you never forget who you are – the world may try to tell you otherwise. Be who you are meant to be, and you will set the world on fire. Omni Corde.
