Environmental Design: 99 Sudbury, Club Spaces, Workshops/Talks
Some sketches pertaining to the other spaces to be used during ETO. These include 99 Sudbury; the secret location party space (Til Dawn), various workshop/speakers rooms (at Ryerson University, AMC Theatres) and the club spaces around the Downtown Toronto area. All will include the ETO banner signage (vertical), and the addition of neon lights in some form. An illuminated neon ETO logo will be present at each space, at either the DJ booth or main speaker area.
Environmental Design: The Space at Yonge-Dundas Square
These are some sketches for the various elements included in my environmental design for the main event area, Yonge-Dundas Square. The space will consist of the main stage, an ETO wall, and ETO hubs which will all follow branding standards and have an important part in making the event interactive and exciting.
I plan on using neon lights (for a visual reference click here) at night time as part of the stage set up, or potentially set up on the ground throughout the square. They will be on diagonals, following the visual language of the lines/diagonals of the ETO poster and identity.
The ETO hubs and wall have already been in the process of coming together. In regards to the ETO wall I want to incorporate a motion sensor screen that spans the entire width of the wall. This will be activated by the people standing within the motion range and result in bright colourful designs being painted on (digitally) as movement is made. Each person's movements will be depicted by a different colour, creating a beautiful light show for the audience in the square.
Promotional Material - Wristband Design
As part of my initial proposal, I wanted to include wristbands that included LED lights controlled by radio frequencies (best known as Xylobands). I decided to merge that idea with the more typical type of wristband used at music festivals today, the RFID wristband. This chip will enable the owner of the wristband to attach their profile (as customized by the ETO app) to their wristband in order to access their schedule at ETO hubs, as well as exclusive content. These wristbands will include a smart lock, preventing removal and sharing. The main colour used will be a light grey (almost white) woven material in order to allow the LED lights embedded in the bands to shine through upon activation (at Til Dawn, the secret location party).
Mobile App: Planning Notes and Critique
These are edits that had to be made after looking at the existing app screens. I went through the various/most likely scenarios that could take place, in order to determine what screens should be mocked up.

FINAL STRETCH + UPDATE
It's pretty difficult coming to terms with the fact that I'll (rather my entire class) be finishing up my undergrad in a few weeks, after being in school for nearly 20 years. Of course there is no YSDN in February/March without a load of stress. You know how people have mid-life crises? I think I had my "omg what am I going to do when school is over" crisis last week. Assignments + work + grad show + post-grad thoughts + terrible weather to top it all off, had me in a state of confusion verging on panic.
BUT after some personal time just taking a breather and telling myself that everything will be alright - I was able to get my head back on my shoulders and tackle my to-do list. It has resulted in a few more *hibernation periods* (where I'm working for hours straight on something) than the doctor would recommend, but I think the sigh of relief that will follow later on will be worth it.
MOVING FORWARD...
In terms of my workshop timeline I'm going to be putting in a lot of hours working on my environmental design; the main deliverable I have not completely panned out yet (but I'm getting there!!) But in regards to my app + promotional material, they are pretty much complete but require some tweaking. Documenting the entire project, I will be putting together a booklet that outlines the main deliverables and purpose of the festival, while also serving as a style guide. I also will be test printing in the next week/two for my promotional material (some in smaller scale of course).
After garnering feedback on my wireframes, I went back to my sketchbook and started looking at more potential screens for my ETO app. What would be necessary to view in various scenarios? For example, a new user registering - how would that look? I created more screens and thought of the most common scenarios that would take place; while also fixing the organization of how the app works.
I also spent a good amount of time in my lion den (aka my workspace at home) designing the UI for the app. Hours in the zone not even coding, but imagining how it would work. To be honest, it took 10x longer than I had expected because it wasn't just bringing the wireframes into a new document and adding colour. A lot of consideration had to be taken into how large type was set, what colours were appropriate for buttons, etc. I was also discovering some kinks in my app flow as I went.
I finished up the majority of my screens and brought them into Marvel, a prototyping app that links to Dropbox and pulls images, allowing you to create hotspots and imagine how the app would flow. Unfortunately there are no gesture mock-ups, but you can add screen transitions to imitate them (fade, swipe, etc.) Thank you to Rita Kassia for sharing this!

I got my dimensions mixed up so the app looks significantly smaller than the phone (I'm designing for iPhone 5 resolution) and that's something I'm currently working on sorting out.
