(via Smash the Patriarchy cross-stitch) Faux cross stitch needlework to help you and all the feminists in your life to smash the patriarchy.
(via #BoycottNRA) As #BoycottNRA and the #NeverAgain moment help to turn corporate sponsors and public opinion away from the NRA and towards sensible gun control legislation, this impotent AR-15 serves as a sign of hope that change is finally coming. #GunControlNow

Subversive patriotism -- "War is a Failure of the Imagination". Image depicts a US flag in which the stars are overwritten with letters and bombs.

With all the ugliness coming from the Trump administration, here's a reminder that while America has not lived up to its ideals, we still have ideals that we are supposed to be striving for. One of these ideals is embodied in the plaque mounted on the Statue of Liberty, proclaiming:
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
The same, in Spanish:
"Dadme tus cansados, tus pobres, Tus masas amontonadas gimiendo por respirar libres, Los despreciados de tus congestionadas costas. Enviadme a estos, los desposeidos, basura de la tempestad. Levanto mi lámpara al lado de la puerta dorada!"
Any designer proceeds from these shirts will be donated to organizations doing immigrant or refugee work.

"You can't read this, but it makes you uncomfortable. Don't be afraid."
Tulsa Massacre (May 31 - June 1, 1921)
Museum curator Paul Gardullo, who has spent five years along with Franklin collecting artifacts from the riot and the aftermath, says: “It was the frustration of poor whites not knowing what to do with a successful black community, and in coalition with the city government were given permission to do what they did.”
“It’s a scenario that you see happen from place to place around our country . . . from Wilmington, Delaware, to Washington, D.C., to Chicago, and these are in some ways mass lynchings,” he says. …
“Throughout American history there’s been a vast silence about the atrocities that were performed in the service of white history. . . . There are a lot of silences in relation to this story, and a lot of guilt and shame,” Gardullo explains.
Here are [Daniel Berrigan's] Ten Commandments, modified for today: 1. Call on Jesus when all else fails. Call on Him when all else succeeds (except that never happens). 2. Don't be afraid to be afraid or appalled to be appalled. How do you think the trees feel these days, or the whales, or, for that matter, most humans? 3. Keep your soul to yourself. Soul is a possession worth paying for, they're growing rarer. Learn from monks, they have secrets worth knowing. 4. About practically everything in the world, there's nothing you can do. This is Socratic wisdom. However, about of few things you can do something. Do it, with a good heart. 5. On a long drive, there's bound to be a dull stretch or two. Don't go anywhere with someone who expects you to be interesting all the time. And don't be hard on your fellow travelers. Try to smile after a coffee stop. 6. Practically no one has the stomach to love you, if you don't love yourself. They just endure. So do you. 7. About healing: The gospels tell us that this was Jesus' specialty and he was heard to say: "Take up your couch and walk!" 8. When traveling on an airplane, watch the movie, but don't use the earphones. Then you'll be able to see what's going on, but not understand what's happening, and so you'll feel right at home, little different then you do on the ground. 9. Know that sometimes the only writing material you have is your own blood. 10. Start with the impossible. Proceed calmly towards the improbable. No worry, there are at least five exits.

Brooke Ballenger has been named the grand-prize winner of the 2016 Memphis Magazine Fiction Contest for her story, “Grandfather’s Coat.”
Honorable mention went to “Effects of the Wind” by Laryn Kragt Bakker, a recent Memphis transplant who does graphic design and web development for nonprofits through CEDC.org. His book, Clutching Dust and Stars, was awarded “Best First Novel” by Hearts and Minds Books when it was released in 2009.
I am officially not the winner. But on the bright side it was not a dishonorable mention. #fiction
