With all the ugliness coming from the Trump administration, here's a reminder that while America has not lived up to its ideals, we still have ideals that we are supposed to be striving for. One of these ideals is embodied in the plaque mounted on the Statue of Liberty, proclaiming:

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The same, in Spanish:

"Dadme tus cansados, tus pobres, Tus masas amontonadas gimiendo por respirar libres, Los despreciados de tus congestionadas costas. Enviadme a estos, los desposeidos, basura de la tempestad. Levanto mi lámpara al lado de la puerta dorada!"

Museum curator Paul Gardullo, who has spent five years along with Franklin collecting artifacts from the riot and the aftermath, says: “It was the frustration of poor whites not knowing what to do with a successful black community, and in coalition with the city government were given permission to do what they did.”

“It’s a scenario that you see happen from place to place around our country . . . from Wilmington, Delaware, to Washington, D.C., to Chicago, and these are in some ways mass lynchings,” he says. …

“Throughout American history there’s been a vast silence about the atrocities that were performed in the service of white history. . . . There are a lot of silences in relation to this story, and a lot of guilt and shame,” Gardullo explains.

Know that sometimes the only writing material you have is your own blood. 10. Start with the impossible. Proceed calmly towards the improbable. No worry, there are at least five exits.

Brooke Ballenger has been named the grand-prize winner of the 2016 Memphis Magazine Fiction Contest for her story, “Grandfather’s Coat.”

Honorable mention went to “Effects of the Wind” by Laryn Kragt Bakker, a recent Memphis transplant who does graphic design and web development for nonprofits through CEDC.org. His book, Clutching Dust and Stars, was awarded “Best First Novel” by Hearts and Minds Books when it was released in 2009.
