If I'm not mistaken, this is an intersectional-vegan feminism argument. I first read that kind of analogy in The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory of Carol J. Adams  (I think Margaret Atwood's "The Edible Woman" is based on this kind of analogy as well. I haven't read that one yet, but I wanted to add it for those who are interested).

It's been a long time since I read The Sexual Politics of Meat but I remember, it was a quite interesting read and I agreed with the most part of it such as comparing the exploitation of the women's bodies in prostitution and porn with a butcher's dismemberment of an animal and displaying them in shop windows or the similarity between the fate of female animals used as breeding stock and most women in patriarchy. Yes, maybe there can also be a common connection between patriarchy and men's hunger for meat and making its consumption especially pornographic (look at that guy Salt Bae's videos and him being viral for example), BUT it's still so absurd to say that "you have to be vegan to be a real feminist". Feminism is not about animals. No.

Actually I find it quite arrogant and tone-deaf to subject feminism to this kind of conditions/side activisms. There are women who live in such primitive and poor situations that let alone access to hygiene products, they can’t even find a nutritious food. There are such husbands in rural areas of the third world countries that if the wife does not put that meat in the food she cooks, they can beat that woman all evening (this is my great-great-grandma by the way). You can draw an analogy between animal cruelty and patriarchal oppression, but believing that's the main concern of feminism is absurd and not realistic, sorry. Also, not every woman comes from the same cultural environment and society but feminism has to include them all.

I really respect vegan/vegetarian people but feminism should be only about female humans and their oppression, rights etc. Animal cruelty and animal rights are subjects of another discussion. We can defend animal rights and support women's liberation separately, respectively. There is no need to gather them all under the same roof or make one condition for the other.

Unfortunately, intersectional feminism does nothing but distances us from the 'woman', day by day.
