You’re sitting at the dining table in the Sunny’s kitchen, chin resting in your palm as you quietly watch Sanji prepare dinner. Watching Sanji cook is nothing new. You enjoy spending time with the Straw Hat cook, whether you both silently enjoy each other’s presence or chat happily the entire time. It’s peaceful, and you certainly feel closer to the man due to your shared time.
Today, you have sat quietly, just watching as Sanji hums softly to himself, moving around the kitchen with a practiced ease as he prepares the evening’s meal. He looks so at peace—at home, surrounded by the smell of various spices and the heat of the stove—and that peace is what stands out to you. It has to be broken.
“Sanji?” You call out, grabbing his attention as you attempt to keep your voice steady.
“Yes, Y/N-swan?” He replies immediately, a smile in his voice as he says your name affectionately.
“Is the ocean a soup?” You ask, tone serious as you can manage.
Sanji pauses, spoon in hand as he’s stirring the pot in front of him, and turns to face you. He has one eyebrow raised in disbelief, indicating he thinks your question is ridiculous.
“Well?” You ask, a small smirk pulling at your lips.
“You’re kidding?” He asks. “What kind of question is that? Of course the ocean isn’t a soup. That doesn’t make any sense.”
“Doesn’t it, though?” You ask, raising your chin off your palm as you sit up straight, dropping your hand to rest against the table.
“Come on,” you pry. “What goes into a soup?”
Sanji sets the spoon down on the counter and adjusts the stove’s heat to “low” so that he can lean against the counter, arms crossed, as he address your question doubtfully.
“Well, a good soup requires water, vegetables, salt, and—me personally and with Luffy around?—a little bit of meat.”
You grin widely as you stare at Sanji, raising your eyebrows as if to say, ‘See? I told you!’
Sanji’s words settle between you. He stares at you as he considers his own words. He purses his lips while he considers the ocean itself—a body of salt water full of vegetation and meat. Finally, he lets his head fall back as he lets out a groan and closes his eyes in frustration.
“The ocean is a soup,” he says dejectedly.
You laugh. “The ocean is a soup!”
Sanji lowers his gaze back to you.
“I hate you for this.”
“No, you don’t.”
“No, I don’t,” he agrees before turning back to his cooking.
A comfortable silence envelops the Sunny’s kitchen once more as Sanji settles back into his cooking and you settle back into your position watching him. The silence stays until another idea comes to mind.
“Hey, Sanji? Does that make the All Blue a gourmet soup?”
