About growing up with a good man as a father
Sometimes I get asked why I'm so impatient with men, why I have such "unfounded hatred" towards them. After all, I had a good father.
Yes, I had a good father.
I had a father that cared for his children, who worked part-time and then stayed home to take care of me and my brother while our mother went to work. I had a father who hated nothing more than being asked if he's "babysitting the kids again".
I had a good father and I have a good mother who had to hear God-knows-what because she decided against what was expected of her as a mother in the late 90s and started working full-time again after the mandatory maternity leave that Germany offers.
And that's exactly why I'm so impatient with men: I had a good father, so I KNOW that men can be good - so many of them just don't want to be.
The benefits of the patriarchy get used to gain a personal advantage (sometimes accidentally, oftentimes entirely on purpose). In times of online-hate, bodyshaming, catcalling, sexual assault and worse, most men aren't brave enough to say something. Most of them will just look away.
Every woman knows at least one woman who as been sexually assaulted. Somehow, most men don't know a single perpetrator.
On social media, girls are being pushed more and more into outdated gender roles than just a few years ago. There's "tradwife influencers" who tell young girls how wonderful it is to not have to work, to instead take care of their husbands and their 8 children. Don't worry about your future or current politics, your husband will pay for everything. That this makes it impossible to escape things like domestic abuse simply gets swept under the rug.
There's the Andrew Tates of the world that want to tell young boys that women are "the weaker sex" and that if she says "No" she just means "convince me".
Ozempic and the return of the 2000's heroin-chic have only worsened this situation. Girls are being raised to be as thin, as submissive as possible. Grown women partake in this whole circus and show young girls one thing: just don't have any opinions, then everything will be okay.
Because a woman who has opinions and loudly shares them is a problem in the system, a thorn in the side of the men leading this world.
Occasionally the fact that I de-centralize men and my impatience lead to me being called a "man-hating lesbian". Meanwhile the (admittedly few) men I have in my life will tell you that I never hate without reason - I just don't accept being treated badly. If you behave like shit, I will tell you such. That's how my father raised me.
But well, I'll be the man-hating lesbian people believe me to be. Even if my personal sexual orientation has nothing to do with the fact that I'm fed up.
If I open my mouth, maybe others will too.

I guess a more general version of the point is that in the last 50-ish years, everyday language has borrowed more and more of both the terminology and structural features of technical language. This happens for a lot of reasons. But I think it's mostly not a good thing. For one, being abstract and technical is not actually very useful in the messy real world, where concepts are fuzzy and vague and most things of importance are not quantifiable. For another, if natural language borrows too much of the authority of science and the law, it might find that there's not enough left afterwards for science and the law to do what we need them to do.
Why are you saying 'minor' when you mean 'child'?
Why are you saying 'they're a narcissist' when you mean 'they're being mean to me'?
Why are you saying 'hyperfixation' when you mean 'interest'?
Why are you saying 'gaslighting' when you mean 'lying'?
Why are you saying 'plagiarism' when you mean 'rip-off'?
Why are you saying 'war crime' when you mean 'immoral act'?
Are you so afraid of your own judgement that you need to borrow authority from a more objective domain? Does using a word from a technical language actually make what you're saying more objective? Or is it just a way of hiding behind the ever-diminishing authority of academia? Why are you too afraid to speak in your own voice?
