The Cackling Gunslingers
Here is random challenge I came across on a really cool writer's blog called Terrible Minds. (http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2014/05/30/flash-fiction-challenge-random-title/)
The challenge was using a random number generator to generate 2 random numbers that added up to two random words. You take those 2 words and put them together and you have to make a story from it using 1000 words. The challenge was set for 1 week to make the story.
Here it is, for all you all to read. (sorry if there are grammatical mistakes - it was not edited.) It's the story of the Narex Brothers in a tale called The Cackling Gunslingers.
The air was stale as the rustle of leaves could be heard alongside the trailing voices of the quickly retreating townsfolk. A man housing a newly bought six shooter in his holster, walked away quickly and disappeared into the shadows of the nearby alleyway.
The smell of gunpowder alongside the essence of pine needles and dirt wafted and intermingled throughout the dust-laden breeze of the dusk afternoon. The crowd had now completely dispersed and gone their separate ways with fear and random looks glaring and sprouting over their shoulders as they went. A bullet in the back would be a horrible thing, but to most, it would be expected.
The Narex Brothers had a reputation of crimes of the vicious and cowardly in the years leading up to their hanging. They had created a stir in society throughout the area that made them heavily feared around the outskirts of the Spark Basin and into the valley of Crown Canyon. Even out to the upper banks of the Scorched Tree River, their legend had instilled fear into the locals there. Their multitude of crime locations blanketed the West in such great ground coverage, that people were afraid to be out at night for fear of their encounter, their thievery, and their own demise and judgment from the two mysterious demon souls. When the nights were so still that the moon almost lit up the silence, the townsfolk swore they could hear their horrid cackle in the howling wind. Ever so haunting. Ever so chilling.
The brothers stood and glared at the fleeting townsfolk as they retreated to their homes on the edge of town. Their torn and dirty stetsons darkened their faces where even the vision of their red eyes could not be seen. Just two pitch black faces staring out from hulking bodies of pure evil. They hadn’t moved since that fateful bullet had been shot as both apparitions stood completely still and next to each other in devilish stances. They hovered over the lifeless body of town sheriff Jackson Thorn. The standoff was quick and unexpected. The shots were quick and sharp. The Narex Brothers were so fast that their movements were as ghostly as they appeared. The one known as Jed, walked up to the body of Sheriff Thorn and nudged him in the back with his black boot. Sheriff Thorn was as dead as the departed souls in Rever Cemetery. With his brother Mart watching the crowd with a frozen demeanor, Jed reached down and grasped the star-shaped Sheriff’s badge from the chest of the body and ripped it from its spot with rage-like force. The wool fibers, around where the badge had sat, were now jutting and sprawled out from the newly gaping hole in Sheriff Thorns’ shirt. They looked very reminiscent of the legs of a spider. Jed placed the badge in his left breast pocket of his tattered jacket as both men grasped a leg of Sheriff Thorn as they turned and started to drag him towards Rever Cemetery.
Night time had started to fall as the two feared apparitions were over halfway to Rever Cemetery, which lay across town past the old water tower and the grain mill. Expressionless in their movements, but very precise with their mission, the Narex Brothers dragged the body of Sheriff Thorn towards his new resting place and eternal damnation. Each one of their steps clanked a dissonant ping of spurs into the wind. Their boots, muddy with the dirt of the dead, were worn down on the tips and drastically weathered from the years since the hanging. It was said the depths of hell singed the ends of their boots as they hung from a tree on the banks of the River Styx. Their eternity consisted of hanging from a noose from that very branch, swaying and kicking as they struggled to gain footing, just barely able to tread the ends of their boots in the hellish waters. It was even said that Charon, when transporting the newly damned souls down the river in his ferry, would sometimes cut them free just to see them drown and reappear as they fell from the sky as the rope broke their fall and re-broke their necks.
They made their way slowly past the water tower now. The wooden cask towered above the town and leaned to one side as the noise of constant drips accompanied the night’s calmness. A small dog was lapping up water in a eroded hole next to one of the posts. Each time a downpour would roll through town, water would cascade over the side and splash down next to the post creating a waterhole for any eager animal passing by. The dog looked up as the two apparitions passed by and it froze in its spot. Only its eyes followed the two brothers. It waited for them to drag the body of Sheriff Thorn past the hole and then took off across the dusty street and hunched down and crawled under the boards of the town saloon. It turned around underneath the boards and it’s face could be seen facing out towards the street, cowering and shivering with nervousness and fear.
The Narex Brothers finally reached the wrought iron gates of Rever Cemetery and kicked them open with the heels of Sheriff Thorn’s boots like a battering ram. Passing under the gargoyle head at the gates, they veered to the left dragging the body behind them. Majority of the gravestones were broken and crooked from the harsh weather and shifting earth over the years. The two brothers rounded the corner and followed the dusty path towards the old tree at the top of the hill. Once they reached the base of the tree, they both let go of Sheriff Thorn’s legs at the same time as they slammed into the earth with a loud thud. The old town tree was known as The Devil’s Tree by the locals because all the hangings of the most extreme outlaws had been performed in it’s branches.
The two apparitions both stared down to the broken gravestone at their feet. The stone in completion read:
Here lies the two demon souls of Jed and Mart Narex
This tree damned them to the depths of Hades for all eternity
A man can change his ways, but his evil intent will always remain
I fear the day I meet them again, for I wielded the rope they hung
A brothers love is always strong, but for reasons stronger I've overcome.
-J.T. Narex
A clap of thunder boomed out of nowhere and a crack of lightning streaked down from the heavens and struck the trunk base of the tree. A smolder of smoke permeated from the mark in the tree’s base as a swift gust swept it away and into the night air. The two brothers were gone and along with them the body of Sheriff Thorn.
The moon peaked its bright face out from behind a gathering of dark clouds and shined through the town with its brilliant white light. The silence was so still and stale that for a few brief moments the branches of The Devil’s Tree seemed to whine and creak even without the help of the wind.
With a strong and unexpected gust, the horrid cackling laughter of three could faintly be heard in the night breeze.

Album of the Day: Behemoth - "Evangelion" (2009)
This is by far one of my favorite metal releases to date. You can't get much more sinister and heavy than Behemoth. This is just a haunting and creepy release all around.

Album Of The Day: Ulcerate - "Vermis" (2013)
Ok...so if you are wanting to listen to a heavy band...and I mean HEAVY...then this band is for you!
This release from this New Zealand gem has been out for a while and has not a got a full spin from me yet. I have always been meaning to listen to it all, and when I finally did yesterday, I was blown away.
If I had to compare them to anyone, to me, they remind me a lot like the great Behemoth mixed in with the effects of Cult of Luna. The album and there sound is more dirty and muffled with the recording than Behemoth's later releases. It works for them and gives an almost darker feel with there heavy addition of ambiance and atmospheric elements they use throughout the album.
Check it out now!

Book Buy Of The Day: "Troll Mountain - Complete Novel" by Matthew Reilly
So if you have never read a Matthew Reilly novel, then you have been missing out. The Australian author's books read like the best and most outlandish action movies known to man...but that is why they are great! Please go read his Jack West, Jr. novels today!
I love what he does and I am pretty stoked to dive into this short series. This is a far cry from his normal subject matter and I am a total fantasy buff. I held back from buying the three small serials to finally buy it in one book. It just released today.
Here is the synopsis from his site. I will write a review once I have completed the read:
A dauntless young hero. An army of brutal monsters. An impossible quest.
Journey to the mountain…
In an isolated valley, a small tribe of humans is dying from a terrible illness.
There are rumors, however, that the trolls of Troll Mountain, the valley’s fearsome overlords, have found a cure for the illness: a fabulous elixir.
When his sister is struck down by the disease and his tribal leaders refuse to help him, an intrepid youth named Raf decides to defy his tribe and do the unthinkable: he will journey alone to Troll Mountain and steal the elixir from the dreaded trolls.
But to get to Troll Mountain, Raf will have to pass through dangerous swamps and haunting forests filled with wolves, hobgoblins and, worst of all, the ever-present danger of rogue trolls…
The journey to the mountain has begun.

Album Of The Day: Stabbing Westward - "Wither Blister Burn & Peel (1996)
These guys are still a staple on most rock/alternative radio stations and as they should be. This album along with Darkest Days are a complete must have. Yes, they have a massive NIN influence (never a bad thing), but they can hold there own amongst industrial-based rock. The vocals of Christopher Hall are as haunting as they are powerful and distinctive. He makes the band as unique as they are in my eyes. They left prematurely like many great bands...but you can still hear him, as he fronts his new band The Dreaming.
I know you know them....but check this release out again and turn it up!
Standout Track: "What Do I Have To Do?"

Album of the Day: PRONG - "Ruining Lives" (2014)
I have been so addicted to Prong since I heard the record "Rude Awakening" (1996). That album still remains one of my top 5 albums ever! I would need it if I was stranded somewhere. The writing and blend of smooth to angst vocals by Tommy Victor are just brilliant and by far is my stand out release from Prong.
With finding out they had a new release, I had to pick it up and so far it reminds me of RA. I'm still gonna dive more into it, but I am excited to see these guys are still chipping away at the scene.
Standout Track: Windows Shut

Pennsylvania Omnibus (Michael Bunker) - Review
I remember when I first came across Pennsylvania: Book One on the Kindle Store. First, it was the amazing artwork by the great Jason Gurley, who has a knack for making images just grab your attention and say "BUY ME NOW!". (ATTN FUTURE AUTHORS..MARKETING 101...GET GREAT ARTWORK! This will help you immensely. Never judge a book by its cover, but it will get people interested more often than not. Mark my words.) From there, I had no choice but to click on it and find out what this story may entail. I was shocked to find out that this was an Amish-Sci-Fi story...might I add, the first of its kind. I was so intrigued really, I wanted to purchase it right then and there...but for some reason... I didn't. I still don't know the reason why.
Now let's go to about a month or so later...and since I read a ton of sci-fi, this book popped up all over my recommended book feeds every time I was browsing the store. Always intrigued, I finally took the chance on the purchase. This was were my true addiction started.
I was able to find Pennsylvania early enough in it's creation, that I was eagerly made to wait out the anticipation for the next books (parts) to hit the Kindle store on their drop dates. Even though this can be agonizing for most, my day was always a little better knowing that when I woke up, my pre-order was there waiting for me. What an awesome thing! For this experience to be exactly like this though, there has to be a great story. And that's what Pennsylvania is. It draws you in early and never lets go as it weaves in and out, keeping the charm of all the characters very strong throughout the book and along with all the twists the story brings your way. From the first few pages, you just can't help but like Jed and hope he totally finds his new farmland to claim and start his new life. This story gets you lost in its disarray, destruction and complete hope of the beauty every human is striving for in finding their true reason for living...their destiny.
I love the aspect of how Michael Bunker really uses the purity, hard work, and strong will of the Amish qualities. For some reason, when it is mixed with the complexity of the sci-fi aspect, the innocence of the naivety of Jed just grabs you more when he is encountered with the truth and understanding of what he is actually experiencing. It's pure. It's real. It's brilliant.
Pennsylvania has amazing characters, humor, thrills, hopes, dreams, etc. It is the total package and literally has that WOW effect because it is a really creative sci-fi read that will make you think. Plus I love stories that make you cheer on the protagonist.
I don't want this review to be a SPOIL ALERT, so I will stop here. You need to pick this up today and get immersed in the world of New Pennsylvania. Read this great story now and prepare early for Oklahoma. I know I can't wait.
