In 1791 the 2nd amendment to the constitution was written, the amendment that protects the right for people to own weapon. Exactly 221 years later minus one day 27/28 people (including the shooter and his own mother) died at an elementary school in Connecticut. 20 of innocent people who died where children between 6 and 7 years of age. Out of all the shootings that have happened in America, school shootings upset me the most. I've brought attention to the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012 because whenever I hear the words 'Sandy Hook' my eyes can not stay dry. Since Sandy Hook, America should have learned a big lesson, however there has been 290 school shootings with 17 of those being it 2018 alone. It isn't even March yet. When the second amendment where written, it took anything between 20 seconds to 1 minuets to load a gun and since then guns have developed, America has had a civil war, and been involved in two world wars. Guns have become a completely different weapon to what the where in 1791. We can blame mental health, we can blame violent TV and video games, but at the end of the day the real problem is guns and the second amendment. "Violent games make people violent" my partner plays GTA, but you don't see him carjacking, making drugs and shooting people in real life. He also suffers from mental health issues, but he could not hurt a butterfly, he is the kindest and gentlest person I have ever met. I have also suffered from depression, OCD and anxiety and I have also drowned many sims in swimming pools. But I have never pushed somebody in a swimming pool and built a wall around that pool until they drowned to death in real life. Mental health and violent video games/TV are not the problem, yes mental health services need to be improved but they are not the problem. The problem is guns. I turn my attention to the most recent school shooting in parkland Florida, this time a high school. These students are not 6/7, but they are somebody's son, daughter, brother sister and in the cases of staff parents. Just like the case of Sandy Hook, these innocent victims have had their whole life taken away? Why? Because of a stupid amendment that where written when guns took up to 60 seconds to re load. The parkland shooting lead me to research mass shootings all over the world, the first thing I did was look at school shootings in my own country, the UK. I could only find one shooting from 1996, why is that? Because we don't have the 2nd amendment and a gun control network where set up as a response. I'm 18, I've finished school, I'm currently at college, ready to start university in September. My entire life I've been able to sit in a classroom and know that I am safe, I've never known what it feels like to live in fear of a mass shooting at one of the places where I should be protected. Why don't I fear this? Because my country has gun control. When I where 15 I had a friend's sibling hold a gun to my head, I was petrified and I still don't even know what type of gun it was, or if it where a real gun. The fear still rips through my body. But that gun is no longer in circulation, do you know why? Because we often have weapon amnesty's where people anonymously hand their weapons into the authorities. So I plead to congress, the White House, the federal government, the president. Your country needs gun control, if your not sure how to do it, look at Japan because in my opinion they have some of the best gun control in the world. How many more Sandy Hook's, Stoneman Douglas', Columbine's do there have to be before somebody just listens. It's not just the schools, it's cinemas, nightclubs and just any public place. I wrote this to vent my frustration towards the American government, that has come a long way since 1776, but until you get gun control, Donald Trump you are not going to "make America great again". Rest in peace to all of those innocent mothers, daughters, fathers, son's sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, students, teachers, principals, friends and coaches that have died because of the second amendment.
