A soft humm slips past Noctis’s lips as he leans back against the tub, feeling Prompto moving right along with him. The gentle weight of his back pressed against his chest and the warmth from the water could lull him to sleep, high on the mere presence of his husband.

He might have drifted off right there, if not for Prompto shifting to face him, pressed their lips together for a quick peck of a kiss that has Noctis’s eyes opening a crack when he pulls away to see that brilliant, smiling face of his.

Gods, he was so weak to that smile, could feeling one of his familiar, crooked grins forming in the face of personified sunlight. “Hey,” he whispers, voice straining from the sleep he’d been settling into.

His hand moves from Prompto’s hip to his shoulder, wrapping around it, pulling him fully into his chest before it ventures into wet locks, fingers combing through golden blond hair at a slow, almost agonizing pace as Prompto rests against him, pressing his face into the crook of his neck.

Astrals, he was glad he’d survived what he shouldn’t have, if only to lay here in a warm bath, with nothing between the two of them, letting the water soothe their aches and pains from the long days past.

Whatever had happened, all that mattered was that it gave him the opportunity to be here with Prompto, to turn his head and whisper into his ear, “I love you.”

“Prom?” Noct asks when his boyfriend—fiancé, he reminded himself—approaches him out of the blue. His face is flushed, though he knows it’s less from embarrassment and more from the light of the sun that’s quick to bake his skin after ten years of darkness. Back in highschool, he’d burned more often than he’d tanned, but most everyone lately ended up with painful, peeling skin just from being outside for a couple of hours.

“What’s up?”

But Prompto doesn’t answer, instead scooping the downed king up into his arm in a style better suited for a bride than a man who’d been content to resting an old wound a moment. It takes him by surprise, though not the kind he protests to. No, what he finds himself saying is entirely different.

Green eyes narrow at the other, watching his hand tighten around his wrist, demanding answers to questions that he should know. Propero is cornered, could easily be at this guy’s whims—assuming he could pin him down for even a moment, which Propero doubted.

The two questions come quick, giving him no time to answer one before the next is shot out at him. 

“How do you not know any of this?”

His confusion seems as genuine as Propero’s own, but he doesn’t know with absolute certainty that he’s reading him right. Emotions, after all, are a liability to most of his clones, the one that didn’t have an anchor like he did—does, he reminds himself.

“My name—” he pauses, remembering that he really has one now, that he doesn’t have to hide behind his number any longer. “—is Propero and I have this because of Verstael, same as you.”

Prompto shakes his head, shrugging. “I don’t know... I’m from Lucis. I’ve lived in Insomnia my whole life.” Whoever this guy was, he clearly expected him to know things that he didn’t, and he couldn’t understand why. But if he knew about the barcode, maybe he could tell him about it, finally answer all the questions nobody else could.
