”for eons—- we’ve been lovers since the beginning of civilisation,” he shakes his head, feigning a sigh. “money’s always been too slippery to hold down.” the smile returns to his lips at her laughter, and he joins her, chest rising and falling with each shallow intake of breath. “a cup of coffee it is! i know the perfect blend to mend a broken heart. i guess it’s a good thing that i happen to be on the way to work at the cafe then?”

her laughter later faded, leaving a giant grin in its place. “it must be true what they say, that one door closes and another one opens.” she looked off into the distance for dramatic effect, but her cheesy smile dominated her features. “since you work at the cafe, you must have stories,” she continued, folding her arms. her eyes scanned the room before her head nodded; directing him towards the old man in the corner of the cafe with a stack of newspapers to keep him occupied. “is he a regular? what’s his story?”
