this was NOT to say that I don’t care about people of color NOR was it to say that I don’t care about characters that are people of color simply because of that fact. What I was trying to say was that not being super interested in characters who happen to be black doesn’t mean that you can’t be upset when people are racist towards them. Such as Patricia Dorval from IDV, I don’t personally take much interest in her story (or game 5 as a whole for that matter), and I don’t post about her very much. However, I’m still able to recognize Netease’s removal of her ethnic features to match East Asian beauty standards, and I’m able to be upset about that.

This controversy started over a false rumor on Weibo that people had been fired and replaced with AI. This is now proven false and also impossible to happen (due to it being illegal to do so in China), so what's the issue now? Nothing in-game has been proven to be made with AI. Artists and voice actors came forward to say that costumes and designs aren't AI-generated, and neither is any official artwork. I don't even understand asking for a statement at this point because what would Joker Studios say? They didn't do anything that isnt industry standard. They also never make statements on matters that dont affect people's money or the status of the game, and they have honestly been careful not to use GenAi on anything people pay for.

I don't mind if folks are anti-ai. Personally, my thoughts on the matter are too nuanced and arent relevant to include in this post. I just think that, if you are 100% anti-ai and make no exceptions, you should find a different game to play. Again, I mean this with zero malice. "NetEase" just isn't going to never use AI again, because that is vague and also isnt possible.

My point from the post stands. What do you want Joker Studios to say if they make a statement? They're not going to stop using AI. Its genuinely impossible for them to, due to corporate demands, and AI marketing being industry standard. So what's the plan if a statement never happens?

I was more trying to say that it’s a negative thing that they used AI in the first place for promotional material.

I’m aware that AI is becoming ever increasingly relevant in today’s market, and I’m aware that they’re adapting to that. However, I’m still allowed to be upset about it and refuse to engage with something that promotes it.

The point of a statement would be to actually acknowledge the community, and their distastes and concerns. Netease never denied that they fired workers, denied the usage of AI in any material, or tried to say anything about the controversy. They opted to ignore everything instead, which I personally feel was insulting (even if they didn’t intend to come off as such).

Apart from the AI situation, whitewashing has also been an issue with skins, particularly with Enchantress’s and Forward’s. The furthest Netease went (so far) with fixing that was to darken the skin tones on the character profile icons. And once again, have yet to say anything about the situation. I know that the beauty standards are different in China, and that plays a role in how they design their skins and characters, but those standards (just as many other countries) are rooted in racism, and I’m also allowed to be against them.
