From the train
Since its been a while, here's a quick update of what's been happening: -Yoga Mondays and Wednesdays - enjoying this tremendously -Improv - Wednesday night they brought in an improv instructor for 3 hours - hilarity ensued -Moving - should be complete by the end of the day today. Makes me realize how much useless stuff I've been hoarding -Assessment - we were given a problem to solve on our own Thursday morning to gauge our progress. Things are going well for me :-) -Group Projects - On Fridays rather than work in pairs we work on one large problem as a team of 3-4 for the entire day. This is by far the most fun for me. I had awesome group members for both projects and feel like this is the closest experience to real-world work. -People - My cohort of 23 students is full of incredible people! I've really enjoyed learning about their backgrounds and ambitions for life after DBC. We've definitely become a pretty tight-knit bunch. That's all for now. It's almost my stop.
Three Days In
Thoroughly enjoying my time thus far. Â Dev Bootcamp is exactly as advertised.
We begin each day with a non-technical activity. Â Monday we did introductions and played a fun programming-related team-building exercise. Â Tuesday we learned about "engineering empathy" and how to give constructive feedback to each other. Â Wednesday we did yoga for an hour. Â I really enjoy that this experience focuses not just on teaching programming but on developing well-balanced professionals.
A morning lecture begins the technical part of our day, followed by an hour or two of coding in pairs. Â We break for lunch for about an hour and a half, though most people don't go for nearly that long. Â There are plenty of fast food options within a few blocks, though once I get settled, I'd like to begin packing my own food. Â After lunch we return to an afternoon lecture, followed by coding for the remainder of the day (and into the night). Â That's the basic rhythm of our day.
The aspect of this experience I've enjoyed learning the most so far is how to "pair program". Â When I first read about this concept, it seemed formal and intimidating, but now that I've practiced it for three days now (to the tune of about 30 hours) it feels perfectly natural. Â In my mind I had pictured two people fighting over a keyboard and grabbing the mouse from one another. Â Fortunately each workstation is equipped with two of each. Â I had pictured one person silently writing code while the other watched, and then switching at some measured interval. Â This couldn't be further from reality. Â At the beginning of each problem, my pair and I discuss the assignment and how we'd like to approach it. Â We may sketch out a few things on a whiteboard to clarify our ideas and begin to synthesize a solution. Â We then decide who is going to "take the wheel" and start writing code. Â We stick to this setup while we hash our a rough draft, but once we've gotten deep into the problem, the "driver"/"navigator" roles fall away and ideas flow freely onto the screen in a conversational back-and-forth. Â No one person is the author of this code, it is truly a collaborative work. Â While it is satisfying to solve a problem on your own, solving through collaboration is intensely rewarding.
Three days in I couldn't be more sure this is exactly what I'm supposed to be doing right now.
The more I code the more I realize I don't know how to code
I've been playing around with a silly little project to keep myself occupied before I start at DBC. Â While I have done really well on the short, bite-sized exercises that were part of the DBC prep-work and enjoyed tacking some of the project Euler problems, when I start trying something from scratch, things quickly get out of control. Â I started with a simple text-based game all in one file. Â After deciding I should make it truly object-oriented, I separated all the classes into different files. Â Finally, I decided I should try and make it in true model-view-controller style and further complicated things for myself.
I realize my main problem here is I don't know how to design an application yet. Â I tried to do all of these things at once without really taking the time to define how it should work. Â I just started coding and changed things as I went. Â I moved functionality from one class to another and then back. Â I'm definitely not writing efficient, clean code, just hacking together the most obvious solution to flesh out my idea. Â I guess that's why I'm paying all this money to go to Dev Bootcamp.

Apartment hunting... still
Viewed a dozen or so places this weekend. Â Applied for one, was beaten to it by other people. Â Franticly called and texted people all day Monday to secure another unit in the same building. Â Realized we can't put the cat in storage for two weeks with the furniture.
Apartment Hunting
...is the worst thing in the world!
Booked showings for 8-10 places on Saturday.  Excited about moving to Chicago, not excited about moving to Chicago.
Hello, World!
Hello, World! Â I took my first programming class 12 years ago and was hooked from day one. Â I learned C++ and Java in high school, studied computer science for a few semesters in college, and have dabbled in web and iOS development on my own since. Â However the decisions I've made over the years have put me on a different path... until now. Â I recently received my prep material for Dev Boot Camp and can't wait to dig in!
