Arnold Schönberg - Gurrelieder: Vorspiel • “Simon Rattle” with the “Berliner Philharmoniker” [Duration 6:50] | As you will realize after hearing only the first few notes, this piece was written before Schönberg’s atonal phase and the result is incredible! Even more interesting is the enormous ensemble, consisting of approximately 150 instrumentalists (10 Horns, 2 Contrabassoons etc.) and 200 vocalists. If you ever get the possibility to see this piece live, DO IT! (It is extremely rare that the Gurrelieder are performed, simply because of the effort it takes to organize everything)

Rachmaninov - The Isle of the Dead (Op.29) • “Sir Andrew Davis” with the “Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra” [Duration 21:40] | Rachmaninov wrote this symphonic poem as an homage to the same-titled painting by Arnold Böcklin (,which you can see in the video).

Bohuslav Martinů - Symphony No.1 • “Jirí Belohlávek” with the “BBC Symphony Orchestra” [Duration 36:49] | Side note: The Symphony was composed in 1942 after Martinu emigrated to the United States (a year before).
