one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.
Rock Pigeon enjoying some seaweed at Pier 4 beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park. I believe it is succulent or red string Seaweed (Sarcodiotheca gaudichaudii). Many pigeons were eating it like crazy!
Gastropod west for the @color-palettes challenge this month!
It's finally finished!
My 1890s "Keystone" vest, entirely handspun yarn from local sheep, natural colours (with the exception of the reddish brown stripe which we dyed with foraged black walnuts), handwoven on my rigid heddle loom and self drafted pattern. The lining is a salvaged polished cotton. I'm beyond pleased with the fit, look, and feel!

It's dry enough that seed processing is an easy and pleasant outdoor task, and today's light breeze is cooperating.
10g of bald head mustard seed. That's quite a respectable amount considering this is about a dozen plants who unexpectedly experienced a heat wave and excessive dryness just as they were setting seed this spring.

I’ve had this perendaleXmerino fleece for almost a year now, so it’s time it gets washed so the lanolin doesn’t set or discolour the wool. I left it all packed so the fleece wouldn’t risk being exposed to moths or other nasties prior to now.
Since I can only wash fleeces in tubs in my bath, I prefer to pick the locks so they can be lined up in washbags. This is going to be particularly important since I will have to do several separate washing sessions to get through this 3kg of fleece! I also feel that picking lets me get to know the fleece & allows the locks to be more thoroughly scoured.

adulthood notes:
The Rodeo Rule: you only have to do it for the first time once.
The Rohan Rule: if you are at a social function full of new people and you want to be liked, find someone doing important work like setup or food prep and offer to help.
The Tutorial Mode Rule: to navigate an unfamiliar situation where you fear you will mess up an interaction, preface the interaction by mentioning that you've never done this before, and let them know if you have a specific concern or question.
The Rocket Science Rule: most new things you want to try seem very complicated but are simple when taken step by step.
The [X] Will Remember That Rule: if you need to make small talk with the same person on a regular basis, try to save one fact or current event in their life from a given conversation and bring it up next time you talk.
The Cool Binder Rule: by wearing clothes and accessories that are to your taste instead of trying to blend in, people will be more likely to compliment you and show interest in you as a person.

I'm gonna say it, I do think that even the laziest person imaginable should have a roof over their head, food in their stomach, and access to healthcare
a lot of people are reblogging this saying that most "lazy" people are actually just disabled or that the concept of laziness itself is a product of our society's obsession with productivity. this is all true, but it is not my point.
even if someone WAS just lazy and simply didn't want to do anything but lie on the couch and watch tv, they should still have these things. it's irrelevant whether some people aren't actually lazy because everyone, including hypothetical lazy people, should have their basic needs met.
if we have the resources to do it, there is no defense of letting people die because they don't want to work, and much less because they can't.
I don't want lazy people to have basic necessities because they "actually" deserve them because they ARE working or CAN'T work. I want lazy people to have basic necessities because they are people, and we shouldn't leave them to die when we have the resources not to.

What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.
New spindle new spindle!!! You ever meet a new tool and get the feeling that it was meant to be? like it was made for you? Something about this spindle ✨clicked✨ for me and it feels so nice to spin with. It's like it's teaching me how to supported spin. It feels so wonderful in the hand and it's so pretty too. Made from reclaimed wood and other materials (:
I've been really struggling with supported spinning, but with the new spindle I think I'm really starting to get the hang of it. Look how finely I can spin! it's relatively even too! The process feels so smooth and delightful!
Many supported spindles are wildly expensive and I was planning on waiting until MD Sheep/Wool to try to find one at a discount or something. And then I found this one for a perfectly reasonable price. I didn't think I was going to go for it, but I could not stop thinking about it. I'm so glad I took a chance on it~
The spindle is from Rag Bag Rebel Alliance on Etsy (HIGHLY recommend!)
The Fiber is "Sophisticat" from Living Dreams Yarn/Fiber (I've been spinning it from the fold)
