"Sharks are nice" is a similar phenomenon in the opposite direction. Pop culture portrays sharks as malevolant killing machines who crave human flesh, so when people realize they're just animals who don't attack people any more than other predators, they overcompensate into thinking you can just swim with great whites with no danger.

Chimpanzees are not unhinged vicious monsters, they are complex social animals that are capable of treating each other with love and tenderness as well as shocking violence, just like humans do. Humans also have a track record of treating chimps terribly and putting them in high stress situations where they can respond violently. Human encroachment on chimp habitat is also forcing them into closer proximity to each other, leading to heightened territorial violence over dwindling resources.

Animals kill other animals to eat them. The act of killing for food is not evil. The process of death is not bad. Death is morally neutral.

Violence is one of many tools animals use to navigate social disputes. Horses use violence. Ants use violence. And yes, chimps, gorillas, bonobos and humans use violence. Violent impulses and reactions are natural occurrences.

Laziness does not exist. Minimising energy expenditure is a good survival strategy and can be taken to the extreme - like pandas, sloths, and a variety of other species. That does not make them 'useless' or 'failures'.

⊹ tension so thick that other characters start noticing like “hey are you two okay?” (they are not)

⊹ “accidental” sleepovers. “oh no there’s only one bed.” yeah. suuuure.

⊹ biting back a smile. biting back a moan. biting anything really.
