âA whole trolley Jack would be a waste of fuel to transport.â
Pneuma and his host stood staring over plain, clean, unimaginative Car-Trouble equipment. Spare wheel, jump cables, flashlight, jerrycan, wheel-brace.
Neither the MX5 MK-1 nor its minimal contents (owner included) felt right in such a homely garage strewn with American muscle part.
âI need a bottle jack.â
He pointed behind the spare-wheelâs centre cavity. âSmall enough to fit here.â
âgot some around here.â mateo rocks back on his boot heels.Â
car-trouble equipment means a jack. jacks come with most cars. no one usually needs to steal one, theyâre hard to lose, and better to have than not have.Â
pneuma's mx5 doesnât have one to lose. finding one for where he wants it wonât be hard. makes him wonder where the original went though. âcouldnât find nothinâ in any auto stores?â
how do you deal with anxiety ?
i let it fuck me up then i go to bed

astralcraftsâ: coin.
@kiyote!!
coin somehow was talked into babysitting margo while her parents are out, so her first instinct was to take the telepath out to a ice skating rink. now, thoughâ coinâs sitting on the edge of a fountain and margoâs teasing the minnows in it. she doesnât know what else to do with a thirteen year old, really, that wonât bore her.
â what else am i going to do with you? â
watching margo behind the lenses of his sunglasses mateo traces idle patterns across his thigh and looks to coin in turn, the blunt edge of his nail catching on the soft denim. somewhat older kids are a wide open world of endless possibility he doesnât know the half of how to navigate; small children, babies, are an infinitely easier subject. margo sits on the cusp. and, thus, margo tilts towards the iâm-not-really-sure end of things.
âwhat--you never watch her before? donât you got, like, shit you know to do?â

mateo goes to the nail salon regularly (at least twice a month), and heâs on a comfortable basis with all the staff at the small salon he goes to. his polish choice is usually some shade of red, something like a candy apple or cherry, close to those. he can change it up from time-to-time and get something different tho, and he always lets the artist choose the color then. if he doesnât get color, heâll always get a nice clear coat anyway, and he always gets the full thing, hand massage and all. itâs relaxing for him tbh (even if he usually ends up chipping or ruining his polish one way or another, and has to keep it up himself or take it off).
while he wouldnât necessarily say he collects them, mateo really likes getting mugs tbh. heâs always on the lookout for new ones he might like! they can make a nice gift for him from others too.
@synthmama said: you were like a frightened horse on a frozen lake back there.
san junipero.
mateo doesnât know why heâs leaning here, listening to this, looking at her. thereâs an uncomfortable bump in him, his slightly narrowed behind the dark lenses of his sunglasses--because he doesnât like she mentioned it. he could explain to her why he seemed like a âfrightened horse,â or give some half-assed equivalent to an explanation, similar but not quite.
âi donât know what you mean.â he says instead as he wiggles first the piercing in one earlobe, and then the other. it isnât fidgeting; itâs just habit.

glampiirâ: mortimer.
Itâs refreshing to visit an establishment that caters to a variety of dietary restrictions. Under normal circumstances, the gesture would be primarily one-sided for the rest of the meeting, but here he doesnât need to pretend. And speaking of gesturesâŚ
â Thatâs nice. â The lack of familiarity makes it difficult for him to continue the exchange of pleasantries, much less segue to the point of this arrangement.  â Right, remind me again how much I owe you. â
âoh, uh--â right to it, then. heâs not sure what else he expected. mateo looks down to the bartop and takes another sip of his drink. he didnât pay for those metals, earlier; he was only the contact and courier between seller and purchaser, closer to an errand than actual work. still--
âi donât know. how much you thinkinâ?â something in the three-digit range, in his mind. not too much, but enough.Â
thereâs nothing wrong with being soft. like sweet fruit. being soft doesnât mean u get hurt easier, it just means u donât hide it away, you let the tenderness show on the outside. itâs ok to have too many feelings
ameloratesâ: eireen.
Figures. Sheâs feeling unfairly treated, for some reason, and it isnât even him, maybe itâs just life, maybe itâs just her liking to feel sorry for herself. Itâs going to be a long night if this is how all of it starts. Thatâs not his fault but she doesnât want to think that itâs her own, either, that canât be right.Â
âOkay.â Sheâll take what she can get to begin with. Find out some other way to weasel the rest of it out later. Sheâll hang onto him like glue, if not for his company then for some of his sense of peace, of calm, of contentment, sheâs certain heâs got something she doesnât. âLetâs wait a few more minutes.â
âhow long is a few?â he stands and reaches into an inner pocket of his jacket, closing his keys tight in a fisted hand as he pulls them out. tight so he wonât lose them, tight for the sake of it, tight so they bite into his palm. another quick glimpse is taken through the window--a group of dark clouds drift across the sun and take up most of what little of it could still be seen. itâll rain tonight, maybe.
back to eireen, again. he makes his way towards the door, stops beside it. ââcause i got a certain time i said i would be home by.â
ameloratesâ: eireen.
In the back of her mind spins the words like a broken record: then itâs not a love sheâs ever known and that makes her sad, if thatâs what the feeling is, having her furrow her eyebrows as if trying to solve a puzzle. She feels done with this, with this conversation. Itâs starting to feel like a small room decorated all pretty-like with reasons she doesnât want to face, things that she hates.
Still, when he announces his leave, her head perks up, âCan I come?â Sheâll take what she gets, even hanging out with horrible reminders. Throws a look around, the long shadows, the sun will be gone in just a couple of minutes. âNot for dinner, just to pick it up, like, then you eat or whatever and we go out again, yeah?â Sheâs got nothing going on and it makes her feel hollow.
âi mean--i got someone to bring it to.â he says, apologetic still, as he reaches up and rubs at the back of his neck. subs tonight, theyâd decided; the wait in the shop wonât take all that long once heâs there. despite that, mateo sighs, turns to look out of the window, and stares at the edge of the fast setting sun, just a nail on the horizon.
âand iâm not...goinâ back out after i get home. pero,â he looks back to her, still rubbing his neck. âyou can, uh, come get it with me.âÂ

ameloratesâ: eireen.
She tries to spin her head around it but ultimately ends up short; she always imagined what it would be like, seeing her childhood friends and their older siblings and she could never imagine. In her life she saw obligatory presences. Tired eyes barely making dance practice. She shrugs, heavy again, picks at some dry skin on her fingers.
âWhatever. I dunno. I still donât think itâs anyoneâs fuckinâ job. Yâknow? Like⌠you take care of yourself and they fix themselves, somehow, I dunno. If you guys keep being so selfless youâre gonna kill yourselves, I swear.â It might be bitterness talking, it might be a lot of things.  She knows itâs going to get dark soon and she hopes he wonât leave because of it.
ââs love, eireen. family. it can be selfless. letâs just say that.â he answers, voice carrying a flatter note, quieter, even, than before. itâs defensive; mateo looks back to his hands, his eyebrows furrowed. suddenly he wants to be back at the apartment, with his dog, with his boyfriend, away from what he thinks is judgment he wasnât asking for at the end of a day that could have gone better. in any case, now, heâs certain eireen doesnât get it, or she does and it doesnât matter to her.
â'm probably gonna go soon anyways.â he glances quick to his phone, then to her. he sounds almost apologetic, âi got dinner to pick up.â

why canât you just tell a nice lie once in a while?
okay, i told you something, now you tell me something.
youâre running a little bit of a fever.

well, thatâs as close to being a ghost as i want to get.
isnât this a little extreme?
youâre almost looking human again.
iâd like to make somebody sorry.
oh, shit. this is great, this is just great.
___ doesnât have the sense god gave a goat.
the doctors say youâre going to be okay. thatâs not what they were telling us when we got to the emergency room the other night.
maybe we can go to a movie.
you donât have people depending on you.
well, you look pretty messed up right now. what happened?
thatâs all youâre going to get, so donât ask for any more.
well, itâs a good home.
come on, kid, hang in there, weâll go to the hospital, okay?
in the daytime you arenât afraid of anything.
go ahead, ___. dump me! everybody else has and i donât know why you should be any different!

___, all my life i wanted somebody who knew more than i did to tell me the truth. i really wanted that. i had to learn it all the hard way. iâm just giving you a present i always wanted.
but i donât think love solves anything.
