I've been playing Disney Dreamlight Valley, and Maui from Moana is one of the early-ish characters you unlock. He makes references to his song "You're Welcome" rather frequently, and the song's been stuck in my head off and on for the past week since I started playing DDV.

When the spouse and I went to first see the movie in theaters, I assumed the line "Maui can do anything but float" was a plot device, a clever way to let the audience know Maui's fatal flaw (because demigods typically have fatal flaws, e.g. Achilles's heel), but it never came up or became important in the movie. I was bummed.

FOR YEARS that line has bothered me because why put it in at all if it isn't important? Mind you, I've seen this movie 50+ times because of work. This throwaway line has been bothering me for literally actually seriously YEARS.

Then, yesterday, while showering and singing the song in my head again, I was thinking it was a metaphor or something? I thought maybe it was because Maui was so muscular, but that didn't make sense... And I realized...

It's because Maui is voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

What doesn't float? Rocks.

Maui can't float because he's The Rock.
