I don't usually reblog, but I think it's important to share this: the article that the original tweet was based off of was intentionally misleading about Larian's use of AI and, if you saw the full transcripts, has the interviewer Jason Schreier baiting Swen Vincke (Larian CEO) into getting an answer about Larian's use of AI he wanted. Not the truth, but to frame Swen and Larian as a whole in a bad light.
In short, Larian did use a small fraction of AI in their early development as placeholder content/in whiteboxing. HOWEVER!! This was at a time when AI was this new, cool piece of tech that we believed would actually have some value - to quote Vincke, the studio wanted to cash in on this "golden egg." Game developers, especially indie ones, are always keeping an eye on trends and new tools to use to further improve game development. We, the general population, know now how harmful AI is to society and the environment as a whole, and studios like Larian aren't stupid, they know this too. They never fired anyone or replaced anyone with AI, only using it experimentally to see what the deal with AI was and if it had value to them.
Also, not to mention, Larian is a family owned company. They value their employees and fan base more than any fancy new tech - these guys bought a whole ass art firm to support artists. Vincke, in his interview with Schreier, was doing his best to highlight the impact actual creative people have in developing games within Larian. Schreier was trying to bait him into saying the exact kind of thing that got people on the Larian hate train.
Also also, Jason Schreier is notorious for attacking game studios in his interviews. Just look at any of his other interviews with game studios like Larian, where he's constantly trying to twist the answers he's getting from his interviewees to suit his own interests. He doesn't care about the damage he caused, clearly - he only posted the interview transcripts between him and Vincke AFTER seeing the backlash caused by his interview to avoid getting sued.
I'm not defending the use of AI, period. As an artist myself, I'm vehemently against it. But, as a fan of BG3 and as someone who doesn't take the words of anyone at face value, whether it be random internet strangers, hostile journalists, or people in my real life, I personally took the time to check the validity of this original tweet.
TL;DR: The original tweet was quoted from an article between Jason Schreier and Swen Vincke, Larian's CEO. Schreier intentionally set up this interview to frame Vincke/Larian as pro-AI, when in fact they only used AI as an experimental tool when it first started trending. Media literacy is dead, nuance doesn't exist online, and you guys don't hate journalists enough.
The information I'm referring to came from the video linked in post, which further explains the situation with the aforementioned interview transcripts included.
