Preserving classic videogames from consoles past.

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.

I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history

If you’re still desperately thirsty after having some water, you probably need electrolytes. There are many options - eat a pickle, have a gatorade (or whatever brand you prefer), add an electrolyte packet to your water, sprinkle salt on some watermelon, make a fun drink with coconut water.

Foods count for hydration, too! Juicy fresh fruits and veg, cold soups, popsicles!

Pottery sounds terrifying to me. Every post I see is like "Here's this awesome art I made!! Pray for me that it survives The Kiln™ :')" I don't think I could cope with making art that could quite easily blow up and I have no way of controlling that. You guys are true heroes.

so the synopsis of The Ring is: you will die 7 days after watching this videotape. my question is does that apply to rewatching the tape. let's say I watch the tape, wait 6 days, and watch it again. does the timer reset to 7 days? can I do this indefinitely? can I become functionally immortal by watching the evil videotape on a weekly basis?

I require the film where someone decides this means they are functionally immortal for 6 days after watching the tape so seeks it out before going on a series of utterly batshit suicide missions. The tape keeps trying to do creepy crap around them and they're just like "I have 3 days 12 hours left to do this prison break so you're not even on my top 10 concerns, either distract this guard for me or go do something about that hair while you're waiting"

The ghost is so baffled and has no idea how to explain that's not how any of this works that it does save them a couple times while trying to get this across, thus convincing them the theory has been validated

this is a bit more complicated than that, because it's not the video tape that kills you, or her crawling out of the tv for that matter, the videotape infects you with psychic small pox - no seriously

see at the end of her life Sadako was in a mental institution where she was raped by a guard with small pox, thinking he had killed her he dumped her body down the well [where they found her body] but she was down there ALIVE for nearly two decades and all she could do was lash out with psychic ability containing all the nastiness and hurt and sickness

so yeah, rewatching the tape doesn't work because it was the infection that created the fear event that killed them, it's possible that her crawling out of the videotape is an act of kindness that is completely misjudged by a strange creature that only looks human, and then barely

but! in ringu2 there is a scene where a character is kept away from screens because she freaks out when she sees them, and when they walk her past a tv behind screens it starts to show the well and she survived longer than seven days

so there is a second option - if you could dodge tvs long enough you could outlive the curse by having her appear at really inconvenient times for your enemies, wanna break into a security office walk past their monitors making her manifest as you hightail it out of dodge, you could have her manifest in all manner of places and as long as you're gone by the time she falls out of the glass you're golden

Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
