Honey Lemon Soda VS. Kimi Ni Todoke
While recently watching Honey Lemon Soda, I noticed lots of aspects similar to another anime I've watched called Kimi Ni Todoke. I wanted to share the similarities in hopes of finding others who have taken notice of this as well.
First and foremost, I want to preface this by stating that I'm not implying one copies the other.
Now, I believe it's best to start with some general facts about each manga series.
"Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Karuho Shiina. It was published by Shueisha in Bessatsu Margaret from 2005 to 2017 and collected in 30 tankōbon volumes."
"Honey Lemon Soda is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Mayu Murata. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōjo manga magazine Ribon since December 2015, with its chapters collected into 29 tankōbon volumes as of August 2025."
The first thing that caught my attention was the premise of the stories; most popular guy in class helps the marginalised weird girl gain confidence through making friends and falling in love. When looking at it from a further perspective, it seems to have the exact same plot. But there are also significant differences.
Miura Kai and Kazehaya Shota
The love interest are, in my opinion, the ones who make the difference in these particular stories.
Since the mangas share the same plot, there needs to be something that sets them apart. And there is.
Miura Kai, although altruistic at his core, he falls more into the nonchalant and stoic love interest category. While Kazehaya Shota leans more into being soft and sweet, rarely assertive. This applies to how they act with others too.
Miura is mostly uninterested in majority of things, secretive to everyone including close friends, unafraid of being different or unique. His popularity, especially with girls, comes from his looks and laid back attitude. For Kazehaya, on the other hand, it's his friendliness, his understanding nature and his ability to mold himself after the people he actively interacts with (as well as his dashing handsomeness, of course).
But Kazehaya is just as much of a dork compared to Sawako, the main character. He faces his own challenges and misunderstandings. He grows and learns things about himself together with her. Miura is made out to be this mature and stable guy, whose life experience helps him provide help to Uka. He has his beliefs and lifestyle already firmly established, unlike Kazehaya.
Ishimori Uka and Kuronuma Sawako
Besides the similarities in physical appearance Ishimori Uka and Kuronuma Sawako have, they also are very alike morally.
They are both bullied in middle school by classmates who give them nicknames in reference to their odd social behavior; Sawako is nicknamed "Sadako" for looking and acting as a ghost and Uka is nicknamed "Stoney" for being unable to properly express emotions and freezing in place when being approached.
Although in Honey Lemon Soda, it is Miura who gives a helping hand to Uka, while Kimi Ni Todoke, it is Sawako who first approaches Kazehaya to give him directions, later on Kazehaya stands up for Sawako during school. These two first interactions spark the beginning of two complicated love stories. Those moments ignite admiration and appreciation within the girls towards the first people who took the time to watch over them.
From then on, their behaviour with the classmates, friends and love interests are almost identical. From the constant overthinking which complicates everything to the often crying ("It's happy tears this time..."). They both think the same about their friends ("Are we...really friends?") and about romance in general ("These are feelings of appreciation and admiration!").
They even have a rival for the love interest who appears right when they get close to the boys. Whenever you think they are just about to confess to each other, from a distance, you hear "Is that...an ex-classmate from junior high?!". And together with that, the main characters both fall in the black pits of the "They are still in love with each other, I am getting in the way" void.
Heck, even the love confessions are pretty similar (and the reaction to them, as well).
Speed run section of random small similarities I remember on the way:
Both main characters do not have personal mobile phones until their friends (and love interests) convince them to get one
Having to learn how to text and speak informally to people
"How can I get his number so I can text him"
Kind of the whole school culture festival arc with the little confession at the end
Speaking of festivals...the "He surely is here with *rival* and she surely looks so much prettier in the yukata" curse of the summer festival
Both are academically gifted and try to help their classmates with their notes
They volunteer to do the hard work around the classroom in hopes of being useless
They go through a "He only hangs around me because he wants to help me and nothing more" phase
Welp, this is it for now...Tell me you see it too
