the thing that bewilders me about a lot of fantasy readers is that they read about settings and plots featuring imperialism, war, and slavery and then call the inclusion of violence, abuse, and sexual exploitation "edgy" and "gratuitous" and it's like what did you think was happening. why were you under the impression that you were going to get a cozy story about fascism or something. far be it from me to criticize anyone for not wanting to read about torture in their spare time, and there are certainly cases where heavy subjects are poorly executed, but is it not equally insulting to sanitize them for a feel-good adventure.. like no one put a gun to your head and forced you to give your fantasy novel an enslaved protagonist. sometimes writing is supposed to make you feel bad

still can't stop thinking about the fact that they have demigenders in tevinter but if you're in ferelden you're still using medieval euphemisms for being gay. there are some extremely funny situations to put several characters in

sitcom situation where marcus has to help out the shadow dragons and vaguely mentions he's Married and has A Partner because he doesn't want it to become a thing . but because people suddenly got cool with that in tevinter recently everyone just assumes the partner he conveniently never genders is nonbinary. then they meet anders and are like yeah sure i see it, which eventually leads to everyone getting mad at marcus for misgendering him

found an old post where i said the shadow dragons were my favourite faction and thought "well that can't be true i'm always complaining about the shadow dragons". but the longer i think about it, the more i realise that by process of elimination i really do hate them the least.
