When I saw Adrian and his mom interact for the first time, I didn't get the read that she was sweet, and I was actually really surprised when I saw ppl say that she was. My first impression of their dynamic was that shes the overbearing parent who doesn't respect her child's boundaries/autonomy. Which is a common trend with parents who have neurodivergent kids as they infantlize them. She proceeds to humiliate Adrian in front of the 11th St. kids as he's covering his ears and begging her to stop. That's not sweet, and that's certainly not kind. Especially in the condescending way she talked about him right in front of him. No wonder Adrian was "mean" to her. She hardly backed off when he was acting like that. What makes you think shed listen to him when he acts nicely?
Throughout the two seasons, we see how much Adrian values his autonomy, and it's the one scenario he will always bite back in, including when it involves Chris. Yknow the guy who can do no wrong in his eyes. Every other situation just rolls off him, and he can't be bothered. When it comes to his autonomy, he bucks up, and I wouldn't be surprised if that stems from the way his mother has treated him.
Plus, you also know what kinda of parent she has to be in order to let Dorian treat Adrian so poorly that even Chris admits it was bad. Bare minimum its neglectful and shitty ass parenting. No wonder it impacts the way he views her and interacts with her.
Personally, I think it would be a good way to shine light on the mistreatment neurodivergent kids' face due to their parents' lack of education and their conscious/subconscious biases. Though it seems like Gunn wants to just make a gag out of it, and that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth
