Ranking Sonic game anniversaries on my own vibes
2011. For as much as I find the game empty in retrospect, it still was a major celebration of multiple eras. The music library is stacked, and the concerts surrounding it was amazing. Also, recording fans saying happy birthday months earlier and using it in game was sweet
2001. Sonic was no longer gonna be first party, but I feel SA2 and the 10th birthday merch was a nice send off for Sega. And a new beginning starting with Advance
2026. For as merch shilled as it is currently, the crossover collabs really scream the 90s for just doing everything. Sonic is financially getting his groove on again. I do understand concerns of "Fortniting" though, and the Sonic pixel creator is lame. But even more concerts, merch, and whatnot
2006 crashed for 06, but Sonic was buffered with the relevant 5th gen and handheld series. It's a shame the big 06 was rushed, I feel it linearizing multiple characters was a good gameplay idea, and Blur's CG was beautiful. Also Riders 1 is cracked
2016 I do not care for Mania. I find the mystique of "fans working for Sega" extremely dumb. It isn't even truly an anniversary title (2017), and further exacerbated the issue of relegating Classic as a separate char/brand. Outside that...Olympics and Boom Fire Ice...decent, but empty
2021. Not really much besides Colors Ult flopping. I do not care for the movies
1996. Ye this is the worst one. Sega infighting aggressively, and X-treme deadass is probably the most "potential man" Sonic game scrapped honestly that would've killed him if released. It was a time of very bad uncertainty for the franchise even worse than 2021, shame it's rosetinted
Hope 2027 has something...
