Black woman invents or popularises a phrase -> it enters the vernacular and circulates widely amongst Black and nonblack people -> people removed from the phrase's initial context read it too literally, do not interpret it with sensitivity, assume that the ideas expressed when people use it are shallow / "over"-sexualised / problematic in some way or another that mirrors their feelings about Black people as a whole -> there is a backlash where a supposedly more 'thoughtful,' 'subversive,' etc. alternative to the initial phrase is offered, implying that the initial phrase contained none of that complexity within it -> rinse & repeat

I know that the main quests have limited time to get into things, so they had to get over their initial clashing a lot faster than I would've liked. This is kinda just exploring that early dynamic a bit further.
i think one of my biggest fears about sharing my fics (other than them just being really fucking bad+me completely mischaracterizing everyone) is probably people not realizing that how a character views themself and/or others doesn't necessarily align with my own interpretations or views of the characters. im just a huge fan of the character voice showing through in the narration

imo you get the most out of engaging with media when you strike a balance between treating characters as people (reading interiority into their actions, considering the effect of various aspects of their identity, etc etc) and as vehicles for storytelling (what narrative purpose do they serve, how do their actions and personality function to convey the themes of the work, etc etc). because of course characters are literary devices but also there’s a reason we use literary devices written to embody realistic people in order to tell stories
