WHY:

The love I explore here is the kind that Gale embodies — tender, generous, and unwavering. Love as deep care, freely given without demand. Love that is patient, kind, and filled with understanding. The kind that chooses, again and again, to stay.

What does such love look like in the chaos of adventure? How does it grow over years, when passion softens into something steady and unshakable? I explore what love and affection look like in all its forms — what it means to cherish someone without expectation, to choose them every day. I believe we need to see more of this kind of love — to recognize its depth, to feel its warmth. And if it’s the love we long for, we can look to Gale and learn both from him and with him.

WHERE:

Stories take place in the world of BG3 — sometimes within the main events, sometimes in the quiet spaces between them. Others imagine a life beyond the adventure, where love has had time to settle, to grow into something enduring.

The hardest part of this render was finding someone else who belonged here. It's definitely not Evie — if you know her, you know her heart belongs to Gale. And I don't have any other OCs, don't plan to either. Luckily, I remembered this gorgeous woman — a Selûne cleric in my world.

I've had this idea in my head for a long time.

Gale, standing at the edge of camp with a book he isn't reading, his eyes somewhere they probably shouldn't be. Trying to be decent about it. Giving space because he genuinely believes that's the kindest thing he can offer — that what he feels is his to carry, not anyone else's to be burdened with. He's not hiding it to protect himself. He's hiding it to protect her...

...he stands apart from the others, a book open in his hand — ostensibly. The page hasn't turned in an hour. The same sentence sits there, patient and ignored: "The stars above Waterdeep are not the same stars that shine on lesser cities." He'd found it mildly offensive the first time he read it. He hasn't read it since. His eyes lift from the page with a frequency that could not, by any reasonable measure, be described as casual. They find her. They always find her. He looks back down. Counts to something. Looks up again.

The book is a prop at this point, and a poorly deployed one...

A few more notes from my virtual 3D sketchbook.

Some of you have asked me where I get my references. The easiest place to browse lots of great photos, VPs, and art is Pinterest. That being said, Pinterest relies heavily on its algorithm, so your feed will look different from mine. But you can absolutely turn it into your own inspiration space with a few good search queries, and the algorithm will adapt over time. Think about what you love, search for it, and you'll inevitably find something interesting.

Every now and then, I mix several references together, saving them all to dedicated Pinterest folders for future inspiration. So these days, whenever I'm looking for an idea, I simply open those folders and search for something that catches my eye.

A year later, same reference, starting over from scratch. (And yes — this turned out to be the portrait used for Gale's icon in the game. I had completely forgotten about that, haha.)

I know some artists rework their original renders, but that's not really my thing (at least for now). I'd rather go back to the reference and build it all over again from the beginning. It's a nice way to see how much has changed — and to remember what it felt like when I barely knew what I was doing. Colors, lighting, RGB curves, Photoshop... things I really wish I'd known back then.

Almost a year has passed, and I'm still here — which feels like a small miracle, and is entirely thanks to my Patreon supporters. It's tough, but for now I get by.

I’m sure many of you recognize this portrait — and that expression.

What’s funny is that I recreated it from Larian’s reference, and only several days later realized that this is the exact portrait we see in the game all the time — Gale’s icon. (I don’t currently have access to the game, which probably explains a lot.)

I genuinely had no idea.

It’s been far too long since my group — or rather, my little found family — last tried to save the world, so I had completely forgotten.
