The train derailed shortly after the collision. You’d figure the body of a boy wouldn’t cause a big mighty freight train to do that. But it did. Cuz dally wasnt just any boy

Sometimes I think about him standin' in front of that big train engine: how he prolly squared up his shoulders and dug his heels into the gravel; how for a few seconds he mighta felt pure again. I'd like to believe that maybe the smallest parts of him made it all the way back to New York City. Maybe the dust of his soul is still on the front of that freight train? The truest bits of Dallas Winston.

They buried what was left of him in oak lawn cemetery right here in Tulsa exactly 27 steps from where they buried Johnny Cade.

Both of their tombstones were pretty small. They didn’t even bother putting the day they were born on ‘em. Just the year they died.
