HISTORICAL LANDMARKS OF CAPUL ISLAND

I find this island interesting not just because I grew up and have a lot of memories there, but because of the stories behind all the historical sites in this island.

When I was still there, I’ve heard a lot of stories about how does the church was constructed. Elders said that, Spaniards order the citizens of Capul to brought stones which was used to build the Church. Whether you are man, woman, young, old, pregnant, each person was required to brought one big stone. During that time, pregnant women suffers the most because they brought at least two big stones as they also need to carry the stone for their child.

It is a historical tower that serves as the head-quarter of Americans during their stay in the island. I still remember the times when I was there, the place and its’ view is just so beautiful and relaxing. When you go up to the tower, from the South , you can see the Naranjo Island and the province of Masbate while you can see the Mayon Volcano at the North.

During the Moro raid in Capul Island, this stone watch tower overlooking the town serve as a warning system and for refuge of the people.

During Spanish era, there is a place in Capul that serve as the graveyard. They put the grave of a person here. It is said that a portion of it was a small cave where people can see remains or bones of a dead persons.
