We meet Eriko for the first time in the hospital when Izumi interviews her

I never liked the way Izumi talks to Eriko in the context of the whole series in this scene. Eriko is like ew I can’t believe my brother was an ajin and like… i feel like you can tell that’s not how she really feels. She just wants to repel Izumi.

I think Izumi should’ve been able to clock this but nah Tsuina Miura Izumi seems to take what she says at face value and appeals to the sentiment - I know someone whose family turned out to be an ajin and I can’t imagine their pain. Sakurai draws izumi saying this with conviction and sincerity - it makes sense to do this instinctively as an artist without knowledge of where the story would go. Writing scene to scene is Tsuina Miura’s writing style but it makes what Izumi says here kind of puzzling if you really think on it in the context of the whole series. Like you can interpret it as her straight up lying to Eriko that she even cares about the feelings of anti-ajin people. However maybe Tsuina Miura was planning on making her have a bit of self-loathing about being an ajin?

When Tanaka kills Izumi here he interrupts Eriko as she is about to mention Kai, preventing a possible Kai and Izumi & Tosaki meetup.

Okay like what Tanaka does here is just awful. Izumi was just talking to this little girl and you had to go and kill Izumi right in front of her? And he goes after her first? What’s your problem man. Couldn’t you have just waited… she was about to leave but nah he gets all Nightmare on Elm Street about it. Also what a way to meet. If they ever got together and had a kid they would have to lie about how they met huh lmao

Actually now that I think about it I guess it kinda makes sense that he went after Izumi first because if he got the cops first Izumi could probably call for backup/help - but this way he shocks the cops into a stupor and gets that room empty except for Eriko.

Henchman Tanaka kind of gives the impression he’s all brawn and not much of a thinker. Crazy how this will change.
