I think being a senior in band is hard. Like, we've gone through 3 or 4, maybe even 5, seasons of just marching. We've had to sit down the first week and help all the underclassmen, down to the 7th and 8th graders, if you march 7th/8th graders. We're either on hot black top, concrete, or the grass field that is covered in ants. Every year we have to do deal with someone fainting on the field because they weren't drinking enough water or they locked their legs. Every year it's the same old "one more time" from the band directors. I don't know about the rest of the seniors out here, but I could say a crap load about band. I mean, we just go through the motions year after year, dealing with the same exact things year after year. There's also the positive side to band. Some directors require you to wear camelbacks, the water backpacks, so if you want water you already have it. Some directors let you go sit in the shade if on hot concrete. Some even go as far to say if you're standing in ants, move. You might get called an idiot though... The directors become your parents away from home. They become your best friends, someone who you can tell almost anything to and barely be judged. If you have a problem, they can most of the time help you fix it. If not, they call one of the band females to run to the store with money and restock the female products. You don't have to like your leaders, you have to give them an ounce of respect though. We don't have to give you any time of day but we do. We want you to get better. That way, when we leave this year, our band is passed down to the greatest people ever. We fuss and yell because we love you. You are our family. We spend over 100 hours with you a week. We see you in the halls, we stop and talk to you, most of us do. You aren't in our section but you're struggling with your marching and your section leader isn't helping, we go and help. We will stay after and run the entire drill with you if you need it. The seniors have the hardest year in band. We already know that our best run of the entire season has probably already happened on our practice field. We know it's not happening in front of judges at contest, or on Friday nights for our parents. Why would it? Those are usually our crapiest runs. Only the directors and us will get to see the best run possible. So for all the underclassmen that are just dying to take our places when we leave, remember this: it's gonna be you next year. Your last first day of marching band, your last first summer lunch with the freshmen. They are little things right now... Going into my senior year, I'm remembering how everyday has been. How great the people I've been with for 3 seasons, going into my 4th season, how great it's been. For the seniors: give the underclassmen all the love in the world. They are gonna need it when you're gone.
