Georgie Porgie pudding and pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry. And when the boys came out to play, Georgie Porgie ran away. Recently, as my 6 year old daughter is getting older, I have started to notice her slight interest and curiosity in love, boys, and what kissing is all about. I have witnessed her young crushes come into play, and while I have tried to navigate and asses these new feelings within her, I am also acutely aware that I need to broach these topics with her tenderly and sensitively as to not diminish the innocent questioning she presents me with. I could blame all this new curiosity on Walt Disney movies in which a beautiful princess finds herself in love with a dashing young prince and the ultimate highlight at the end of the story is 'They lived happily ever after.' Or I could blame the entertainment industry in General which is consumed with sensuality, sex and relationships. Mykala keeps asking me after listening to the radio in the car why the singer keeps referring to their love interest as 'baby!' Try to explain that one to a 6 year old. Lol. In all honesty, the odd time I listen to the radio as my kids are switching between their DVD's in the car, I am horrified at the lyrics of today's songs. And the majority of the most requested and popular songs are either to do with sex, getting drunk or drugs. An old one that seems to be doing the rounds again here in MA is by Pitbull feat Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer. It's ridiculously sad actually! Now I understand that this is the day and age that we are living in where one night stands are the norm and that I can't hide my kids from all that is going on around them. But what I can do is foster within them a healthy connection with love and relationships between the opposite sex. A true love that goes hand in hand with commitment, sacrifice and unconditional love. I want Mykala to know and understand that having these feelings of interest and fondness towards the opposite sex are not bad and wrong, but It is my responsibility as her parent to guide these feelings through a pure, wise and holy channel. I want my little girl to grow up knowing that relationships are precious and that her heart is precious. That she is valued and treasured firstly by her Heavenly Father, and that keeping her love for one special person(her husband) will be the most satisfying and precious relationship she could ever have. I want her to uphold love so highly and to enjoy that love when maturity, character and wisdom have been deeply established within her. Song of Songs 2:7 'Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.' I know it is going to be one of my biggest challenges with Mykala when all around her screams the opposite of purity and when girls scantily clad bodies are the prerequisite for acquiring love and adoration. I know the term 'modesty' will be a thing of the past and that my daughter will need to wage war against the worldly ideals that are presented before her. That is why I love this poem about Georgie Porgie. But what I love the most about this poem, is the girls reaction. The girls cried after a kiss was stolen from them by this cheeky boy. Those girls crying speaks volumes to me of their modesty and innocence at being taken advantage of by a inquisitive little boy. I can only hope and pray that through our open conversations, our guidance and wisdom about love, boys, and kissing that my little Mykala learns the value of who she is and who she was created for. That she will see the lesson from those little girls tears in Georgie Porgie and take it to heart. I hope that she will still blush brightly at the age of 17 when a boy glances her way, knowing that she has preserved her heart and kept her innocence as a crown. And I pray that she will value her morals and virtue as she navigates through this intriguing concept of love and of coarse 'happily ever after.'
