My take as a graduating SHS student on the new curriculum…
The Department of Education (DepEd) is officially implementing a revised SHS curriculum for the upcoming School Year 2025–2026. The primary objective of this change is to make the SHS curriculum less overwhelming and more practical for real-life scenarios. The revisions are a result of years of feedback from students, teachers, and parents who expressed concerns about the limitations of the existing system.
Here’s a quick and clear breakdown:
1. Fewer Core Subjects
From 15 core subjects down to 5 essential ones focused on communication, life skills, math, science, and Philippine society.
Less memorizing, more understanding.
2. Only Two Tracks Now
The four-track system is now simplified into just:
• Academic Track
• Technical-Professional (TechPro) Track
- Arts and Sports are still available under Academic.
3. More Flexible Electives
Students are allowed to choose electives across different clusters. You’re no longer locked into a single strand, meaning more freedom to explore interests.
4. Longer, More Real Work Immersion
Work immersion is being expanded from 80 hours to 320 - 640 hours, so students gain actual workplace experience instead of just minimal requirements.
5. Pilot Testing Before Nationwide Rollout
Selected schools have already piloted this new curriculum for the DepEd to see and make any revisions before releasing next school year.

Honestly? I agree with it. The new curriculum feels cleaner, more focused, and way more aligned with real-life skills. It actually addresses a lot of the issues students have been pointing out for years.
But as a graduating student, it feels a bit unfair.
We had to push through the heavier, more complicated version, overloaded subjects, fixed strands, confusing requirements, while the next batch will get a smoother experience.
I’m genuinely happy for them, don’t get me wrong. But part of me wishes this change came sooner. I wish we could have experienced the improved curriculum ourselves.
It’s bittersweet. We endured the old system, and even if we won’t directly benefit from these changes, it’s comforting to know that SHS is improving for future students. Maybe our struggles even helped push these changes forward.
