As soon as his head hit the pillow, he heard his front door opening. He didn’t know Amelia was getting home this early, but he felt his mouth curve up in a smile at the thought of having all evening alone with her. He made a mental note to turn his pager off on his desk before he heard an unfamiliar voice. Rather, unexpected voice should be more accurate. He knew perfectly well who the voice belonged to, so it wasn’t unfamiliar, he just didn’t know why that voice was inside his house right now.
“And then you said after dinner we can have ice cream and you said after ice cream, we can play Candyland. Remember? I brought my board so we can play, do you remember you said that Aunt Amy?”
“I remember, Zo,” Amelia lifted her chin to peek into Zola’s backpack, wondering how she fit any clothes in it if she stuffed a big box of Candyland inside. Amelia had stopped at Meredith’s on the way home and rummaged through her sister-in-law’s kitchen while she told Zola to run upstairs and pack her bag, and she was starting to believe she maybe should have checked it before trusting a six-year-old’s judgement. “We’re going to do all of that.”
“Is Uncle Owen here?” Zola shrugged off her bag on the kitchen table and stood on her tiptoes to look down the hallway. Moments later, Owen appeared with the best smile he could plaster on in such a surprise. Zola paid no mind, if she noticed at all, and ran straight into Owen’s arms for him to pick her up.
