It was originally a powerful nexus of the force in general, then after the great schism it became a dark side temple and the Jedi wanted to purify it, but then the temple was destroyed and conquered back forth between Jedi and Sith until both sides forgot that it was built on top of the dark side shrine...except for Palpatine, he knew, thought it was hilarioud, and used it to help cloud the force against the Jedi.

It had a practical purpose at first, then a symbolic ideological one, and finally Palpatine used it for a bit of trolling.

Plus after the Ruusan Reformation, the reformed Jedi Order wanted to crack down on the distant Jedi Lords that had created various fiefdoms and protectorates throughout the Galaxy during the New Sith Wars, and consolidating the Order not just in the Republic capital but explicitly under Republic control was one of the ways they did that.

Which may fall under political convenience, but it's convenient for the Republic rather than the Jedi.

Help I just started thinking about how with Luke/Leia they could so easily get away with it because unless they choose to tell someone no one alive would ever know they’re related, except. Ghost!Obi Wan would know. He would know and he might have to try and hide it from ghost!Anakin. And ghost!Anakin, when he finds out, would be completely unable to voice any disapproval without Leia curbstomping him with an itemized list of over 20 years of high crimes and misdemeanors so he’d be left helplessly glaring at equally helpless ghost!Obi Wan.
