Circa 1965 and Margie and I had just gotten married. I came from a pretty orthodox home. We kept kosher and we kept all the Jewish holidays. Margie's family, on the other hand, actually celebrated Christmas, which I did not know at the time.
So, on the first Christmas, we're married, Margie says we're going to her parents’ house for Christmas. I said what? What do you mean? Well, we have lunch there and gifts, et cetera.
OK. I could say that I was not in a good mood and the whole thing had me from embarrassed to pissed off. So we go to their house, walk in and there's this big Christmas tree with gifts all over it. Decorations and OMG my UPSET LEVEL just went up about ten degrees. Then we sit down for lunch and what do they bring out? Virginia ham!! OH boy. So, I sat there and basically didn't eat.
Now we go into the living room, and they start giving out Christmas gifts. I got a very nice robe, and I smiled and sat back down, but I was still upset. After all the gifts were given out. Margie’s dad goes up to the tree and pulls out some envelopes for his sons-in-laws, and he called my name and he hands me the envelope.
Now in those days I was on the Executive Success Road. I was making 5,000 bucks a year which was damn good because lawyers only made 10,000 a year and gas was $0.21 a gallon so we were getting along just fine.
He hands me this envelope and of course I'm not happy about it. I opened it up and there is a check for $3,000 !! We're talking cash, no taxes. OMG, that's as much as I take home in a year!
OH boy. Christmas- Christmas -Christmas.
Wow, this is my favorite holiday. Do we only get to celebrate it once a year?
