He wasn’t sure how long he had been here, it felt like a couple of hours but then without so much as a phone or a watch, only the quickly setting sun to go by - Emmett couldn’t be too sure. Right now all he knew was that he missed Carlton. What he wouldn’t give to relive those years, when everything felt so much brighter - if only he had known how much he was going to miss it, he would have tried harder to savour every last moment. Instead he had allowed college to bring out the worst in him. He’d been selfish, rude to the people closest to him, he’d made hurtful and stupid decisions, looking back on the past year, he barely recognised who he had become.
Deep down he knew something was wrong, he had done for months. Losing both the energy and the will to get out of bed, even for classes that he had once loved. Failing to do any work, failing school. His Skype-talks with his mom had reached the bare minimum, conversations with his friends now non-existent. Where there was once excitement he felt nothing, he felt almost hollow.
And now he had walked out of hospital where he was supposed to be under watch - not a very close watch, apparently. He saw her out of the corner of his eye, clearly surprised that she had actually been looking for him, not that he had time to say as much. Emmett swallowed thickly as Bay spoke, she was right. He hadn’t thought this through, not properly at least. He shook his head both in response to her question and out of his complete loss for words. [ I’m sorry, for everything. I caused all this chaos, it’s my fault you had to come back here. I won’t be surprised if you hate me. ]
“I don’t hate you, Emmett. I -” She paused, though it was clear what she was about to say. “We all love you.” It felt like a clarification, something that shouldn’t need to be added and yet... here they were. It felt, to Bay, as though her phone was burning a hole through her pocket, she should be calling Melody, she should have called her the moment she set eyes on Emmett, but something was stopping her. “When I heard what happened, I- we dropped everything, yes. But only because you mean so much to us. I wanted to make sure you were okay - that was the most important thing.”
Bay felt at a loss for words, to have gone from not seeing Emmett for so long to suddenly finding their lives intertwined again was a sudden shift that she had not been expecting. She’d missed him. Though that was nothing new, Bay had missed Emmett even when they were together, but it was only now that she realised just how little they had seen each other, particularly since her move to China. In one swift move one hand dove into her pocket, the other signing; “I’m texting Melody. She’s worried sick, I just need to let her know you’re okay.”
She was happy for the distraction, as quickly as it went by, even stretching it a few extra seconds before she eventually returned the phone to her pocket and looked back to her ex-boyfriend. “Emmett, I’m worried about you. And don’t tell me not to be, please, don’t tell me you’re fine or that it’s all some misunderstanding - just don’t.”
