My headcanons for the staff is it's like backup. He doesn't just burn stuff, he needs to able to fight creatures equal +- to his power level. Just setting things on fire doesn't cut it when your opponent is an angel, hellbent on erasing you from existence.

Because of the transcendence, rifts appear occasionally, especially places angels and demons have been in the physical world. Dipper has collected them and shoved it in a ball. Behold! Energy! He can use! And store!

I like shounen. Therefore, Dipper can now have shounen fights. I am a genius.

I've imagined him creating spell-arrays mid-fight. (He would. Nerd.) Waving it, a shield appears. Surfing it like a skateboard. Choking things. Poking them in the eye. The more he uses it, the less rift he has. Imagine the Owl House and their staffs. That's my main inspiration.

(I ADORE the headcanon of him having a truckload of weapons, but now he has something he uses on the regular! In a way. Maybe every millenium? 500 years?)
