More German advertising, 1901-1914.

At 5 a.m. one morning in 1916, George Grosz and John Heartfield invented photomontage. ...Or at least, that's what Grosz later claimed. In reality, amateur artists had been cutting stuff out and sticking it on postcards for some time. Heartfield was a postman so he would have been aware of this. Anyway, I've recreated the event in my comic book and made my own photomontage out of 1910's German advertising and propaganda. In a 1917 article he wrote for Neue Jugend (New Youth), George Grosz celebrated the huge advertisements painted on Berlin walls, which could be viewed from an elevated train. Grosz's words are wonderfully hyperbolic and a great example of the influence of advertising on Dada, so I decided to include them in the second chapter of 'The Many Faces of George Grosz'. (See the first pic above) When I went to Berlin last year it struck me that you can still see gigantic paintings from the train today, only now they are 'street art' rather than advertising. To research the scene, I found some old adverts of the period at the Staatsbibliothek, and incorporated them into the scene. In his article Grosz was probably trying to be provocative by making such lofty pronouncements about "low" commercial art, (once again he pisses off the lefty Bohemian Expressionists by celebrating "the businessman") but as usual with Grosz, you can't really tell what's ironic satire and what's sincere. When you look at these colourful old Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) ads, you can see why Grosz would have got so excited --- they're amazing! though sometimes racist --- so surely his article can't have been entirely tongue in cheek.
