“So let me get this straight,” Sam says, grinning and leaning back against Lena’s desk. “You’re going on a destination-less road trip with Kara, and only Kara, for two weeks?”

“That is the plan, yes,” Lena says, half distracted by the endless stream of emails in her inbox.

“So, you’re telling me you’re spending two weeks confined to a car with Kara Danvers and no one else as a buffer. Just you and Kara, alone together for two weeks. And this is why you need me to temporarily take over as CEO.”

“Yes, Sam.”

Sam bursts out laughing. She holds up a hand, trying to suppress it, but then something in Lena’s expression sets her off again and she’s wheezing. Lena watches in bewilderment as she wipes the corners of her eyes. “Oh honey. You are absolutely fucked.”

There wasn’t as much spontaneity as there had been. For the most part, Clarke didn’t miss that her life had settled, and she wasn’t going out every other night or chasing down a party, or trying to get a beautiful model who had been her best friend to somehow go out with her. She didn’t miss any of her old life save for the occasional desire to be completely free once more, even for a few hours.

“Driver,” Lena says. Kara looks at her for a moment, before she smiles. “You’re so hot,” Kara says. Lena rolls her eyes, flexing her fingers in a gesture of give me my club right now. “Like, so hot. Is this confident Lena Luthor? I think I’m in love with her.” “Kara, give me my club,” Lena says, laughing.

My 70s au is the first thing I ever wrote where I felt like I was reaching for something deeper than a romcom or a smutty one-shot. I've always been really proud of it, and in writing this book I got to dive back in and tug at all the narrative and emotional threads that I wasn't an experienced enough writer to follow 5 years ago.

As always, the fic isn't going anywhere. I've made changes in the book, and I never want to take the original away from people who treasure it. But if you're interested in reading about 70k more words about Claire's emotional journey with a better fleshed out world and a more realistic narrative, I hope you enjoy this new version! 💕

I did a little QI Scan to try and remember the right moment, and I think that she probably always was, but I think the moment she realized she was in love with Clarke in a real way and knew she could let herself figure out what that meant and knew this was all going to happen whether she liked it or not because it already had been is in the opening of chapter 20 where the two of them are sitting on Lexa's couch after they've been at Anya's on Thanksgiving, and they're just sitting there talking about their plans and talking about THEIR life together, and how that all kind of organically just happened. Clarke is sitting on Lexa's lap, it's all very casual and sweet and intimate and comfortable, and I think something goes off in Lexa's brain that this is happening and there's not stopping it, even though the moment is kind of quiet and boring.

Lena is wearing a dress that, at first glance, seems almost modest. It’s black and long-sleeved, tightly fit in a turtleneck style, but not so tight that it looks painted on like some of Lena’s other pieces. The skirt goes all the way to her mid-calf. With her hair piled into a bun and a dark red lip, she looks like a perfect fantasy of a hot librarian. If she was wearing her glasses, Kara might be on her knees already.

What almost makes Kara shatter the laminated glass doors is that when Lena uncrosses her legs, the skirt parts to reveal a slit that goes almost to her hip. Underneath it, she’s wearing black suede heeled boots that go to the knee, leaving an expanse of perfectly soft thigh for Kara to stare at like some erotic game of peekaboo.

It takes considerable self-control to pull the door handle like a normal person.

“I wasn’t expecting to see you today,” Lena says. She rises from her chair, and the slit closes. Kara’s eyes fix there in the hopes that it might reveal itself again.

“Yeah. I…came here for a reason,” Kara says.

Lena raises an eyebrow. “And that reason is?”

Lena hums. “And here I thought you were supposed to be saving me, tonight.”

Kara blinks up from the food to Lena’s chest—oops—before meeting Lena’s eyes. “Save you?” she says. “Haha. What. Like, uh, like Supergirl? Or whatever?”

“No, silly,” Lena says, smiling so fondly at her that it makes Kara a little lightheaded. “As my bodyguard, of course.”

“Oh right! That’s me!” Kara grins, puffing out her chest and clicking her heels and keeping her eyeline firmly above Lena’s shoulders. “At your service, ma’am. Ready to guard your—um.” She halts. “Your… body,” she finishes, flinching.
