Filming.
Consisted of filming sounds and film separately to be later synced during post production.
Murphy and Sam were each filmed seperately and then will appear to be talking to each other during the installation.
They talk in phrases used on Tinder only to reflect via the event speed dating, the behaviour of dating during the era of âflickingâ.

Progress Shots of editing.
Difficulties include separating the two individual video files. The only way to do this is to create 2 projects and ensure they are timed perfectly, so it creates this âconversationâ effect in which we wish to project in our installation during class.

With advice from Andrew, I have produced a set of instructions for the colourful ball I have created.Â
In the hopes that it supports and encourages discussion and understanding.Â

Final Work and Concept Statement
Reflecting on my previous experiments and how they explore the collaboration of discussion, layers, complexity, colours and textuality⌠I wanted to further explore ways in which could stimulate this conversation and understanding of sexuality and identity.
In relation to my work i was also inspired by Rirkrit Tiravanijiaâs work in 1992 at the 303 Gallery of New York, Untitled (Free). Whereby she turned her space into a kitchen and cooked up a rice, Thai curry, free of charge in exchange for interaction and communication with contemporary art.
With this in mind, I began thinking of how I could do create conversation in a casual environment, to get rid of the formalisation and fear of asking certain questions that have genuine intentions of better understanding. I thought of how in schools and even within human resources a technique that is used, is to pass on an object that allows the individual to speak and have the attention focused upon them before passing on the object to allow the next person to have their say. I thought this was significant as when many people speak, confusion tends to be the end result and no understanding may be reached. This same technique can also be used when passing on the question to an individual who could provide an answer. This small interactivity could be underestimated. Teachers use it with children but this icebreaker can also be seen to be used with adults.
In the flexibility experiment I can be seen to be playing with a colourful pipe cleaner. The textures, flexibility and colours intrigued me and I discovered that this would be the main attraction in my final work. As a foundational layer underneath I used a foam ball.
I began taking these pipe cleaners and interweaving them. I made two weaves and then the unwoven pipes I twisted together, to continue the idea of weaving.
This in turn, developed layers, interesting textures, a range of colours and gave a childlike craft edge to it, which I found helped support the contextual background of this idea.
I glued the weaves onto the ball and then held it until it was dry.
My aim for this final work is for the class to interact with it, discover the characteristics with the ball as well as trial the icebreaker game, in order to devise conversation, dialogue and discussion. The interactivity is the final work. Note: You are able to âpassâ the interaction on if a question may be too private or hard to answer, however the more open we are, the more depth of understanding we are able to uncover.
After I made the piece I began to throw it around and then discovered that the ends of the pipes were a bit pointy and edgy. I didnât think this would hurt anyone, however it would have some degree of discomfort when throwing it around to person to person. Then I thought how this could actually be of help in encouragement to pass on the ball to the next individual and not hesitate. It would produce more flow of discussion and more variety of answers within the time frame given of the interaction.I felt like it also reflected how the pointy edge could be in relation to what we fear in asking these questions, we fear we would hurt others and think we could humiliate ourselves from asking questions that could be seen as âdumbâ or not ask-able. We all have different levels of understanding and hence all discussion should be encouraged.
I felt like I was also inspired by an ABC show âYou canât ask thatâ, by exploring the different episodes that showcased a wide variety of people that experience prejudice or challenging situations, I think it would pass on a major insight to the wide public in getting rid of the binaries and constraints and realising that there is a lot more layers and complexity than meets the eye. These are people and should be treated as people.

Experiment 3: Multitude of Colours and Continuous Layering
With reflection into the previous experiments that showcased the many different layers of sexuality and identity. It is evident that nothing is black and white or this and that. Expression of sexuality and identity holds many different layers, it is complex. There is so much society has still yet to understand in order to progress to an accepting and understanding society.
With this in mind I wanted to use a digital/graphic canvas, that showcases the different colourful layers of sexuality and identity. Better yet, I also wanted to show the process of the layering.
I did this by screen recording, the paint i placed upon the canvas. After every individual splash of paint, I altered the colour and repeated this again.
This took a little while due to only being able to put one splatter on the canvas each time. This artwork had a degree of randomness to it as the location of the splatter was placed randomly on the page.Â
In the end I was left with a dynamic, colourful and layered piece of work, which held my concept and an aesthetic presence.

Experiment 2- Questions towards understandingÂ
âFor a uni assessment I am exploring sexuality and identity and for this part of the assessment I am exploring why certain questions are reluctant to be asked, if the aim is to understand and progress towards a more respectful and open minded world.
We live in a world where every experience/sexuality/identity can be unique to an individual and whilst it may be ideal for everyone to already be expected to understand uniqueness and variations, it is unfortunately not always the case and education is needed to further acceptance and respect.
You may feel like you sometimes donât ask questions due to being afraid of offending someone or experiencing miscommunication. Often the way of progressing towards peace and love is the ability to try to understand others perspectives and feelings, in order to reevaluate or improve on your own understanding of someone or a situation.
If you could ask an individual or a community a question based on sexuality and identity. What is a question you would ask?
Who would this question be directed to?
Why do you feel like this is an askable question/ an intimidating question?â
This was passed on to a range of different people, including variations of ages, sexualities and identities, in the hopes to stimulate discussion and progression to better understanding individuals and communities.Â
With this experiment it seemed to be evident that many people were open into better understanding individuals and communities. However, they themselves were reluctant to ask certain questions due to offending others. All of the people who expressed these questions had genuine intentions to better understand people.Â
If you feel like you can provide an insight/education, based on your individual experiences, it would be greatly appreciated if you could comment below. Or if you have a question with genuine intentions to better understand sexuality and identity please do the same.
Discussion supports the progression of harmony and respect to all us different unique individuals. Â
It helps us think about how someone else might feel, by better understanding how we can put ourselves in other peopleâs shoes to see from different perspectives.Â
Reflecting on this experiment myself, I also sometimes found it difficult to word everything in a way that did not offend anyone. I know that I had genuine intentions in educating myself and improving my understanding and helping others do the same. However, I did not want to come across like I was offending anyone or wanting to bring anyone down. However, hopefully I conducted this experiment in a respectful manner.Â
A new form developed from interacting with flexibility.Â
