He thinks he’ll be remembered as the villain in the story. But I forgot to tell him that the villain is usually the person who locks up the maiden and throws away the key. He was the one who let me out.

A gambler, a convict, a wayward son, a lost Grisha, a Suli girl who had become a killer, a boy from the Barrel who had become something worse. How did you survive the Barrel? When they took everything from you, you found a way to make something from nothing.

“I didn’t come here looking for friends. And I’m not here for the washed-up cadgers and cowards, or the losers who think the Barrel owes them something for managing to stay alive. I came for the killers. The hard ones. The hungry ones. The people like me. This is my gang,” Kaz said, staring down the stairs, cane thumping against the boards, “and I’m done taking orders.”

There is no freedom in the Barrel, only good terms. 

People point guns at each other all the time in Ketterdam. It’s basically a handshake.

Ketterdam is the capital of Kerch. The city is a bustling hub for international trade and home to multiple criminal organizations.
