The world keeps asking things of us noise, movement, reasons but tonight we let it wait outside the door like a stranger we don't owe a damn thing to

the lights stay low not for mood just because it feels right like anything brighter would ruin how soft you look when you're not trying

You sit crisscross applesauce on the couch stealing pieces of the silence and turning them into something warm I pretend to watch something on the TV but I've been watching you for longer than I care to admit

There's a rhythm here not music not quiet the stillness just the quiet choreography of existing beside each other without needing to perform

Your head finds my shoulder like it's been there once or twice before like it remembered the entire way without asking for directions

and I don't move

Not when my arm goes numb again no when time slips past unnoticed not when the outside world starts to feel like an awful rumor

Because this this small, shared nothing feels like everything people mean when they talk about peace

No grand gestures no perfect words just your breath falling into sync with mine just the weight of you choosing to stay

And for once I don't feel like I'm waiting for something to go wrong

We don't say it out loud see, that would break it but I think we both damn well know this is the kind of night you try to remember later but never fucking can

So we stay here wrapped up in our shell we made all by ourselves
