ā Who knew back in the day, when OāHara first met Levy, that sheād be working with him and his son and his daughter, all these years later? Jokingly insisting that she knew, OāHara declares āāYou will have a sonā I said to Eugene, āand you will have a daughter, and you will want to work with me until the end of your daysāā

oum kulthum and omar sharifĀ came floating on a LEMON LEAF flying in on aĀ JASMINE WIND oum kulthum and omar sharif
so this is gonna be a dumb rambly text post but hereās the amazing thing about great cometās prologue: by the end of the show, everyone is the opposite of how they are described in some way.
natasha grows up and no longer loves andrei with all her heart.
while sonya may still be good, she broke her cousinās trust by telling marya of the engagement and natasha said she hated her; for a moment, sheās not natashaās closest friend.
maryaās not very old-school in the abduction when sheās making out with helene, to say the least.
anatole is still hot, sure, but he spends his money on an escape to poland instead of women and wine.
helene, we learn, is an actual human being and not aĀ āslutā. she has an affair because sheās in a loveless marriage which is both her and pierreās fault.
dolokhov is not a good shot because, you know, he fucking MISSES.
bolkonsky isnāt crazy, heās just old.
mary isnāt plain, she has interesting and intense feelings (i beg you to believe i cannot help loving you) and excellent skills at communicating them in a beautiful way.
balaga is for more than fun, heās for carrying away an engaged woman to her new lover. heās for a major plot point that the entire show revolves around.
and andrei, by the end of the show, is here.
and what about pierre? ādust and ashesā refutes all ofĀ āpierreā and his entire character of a studious drunk who hates his life turns into a man with such desire to live and love.Ā
just a thought.
ā¦You know?
the park, the bandās visit
for @katrinaslenk
there are a lot of instances in tbv where itās obvious that thereās a thorn in the side of tewfiq and dinahās growing appreciation of each other, and that thorn is the character of sammy. from dinahās muttered āben zonaā in the cafeteria to the awkward exchange tableside to the pinnacle of their conflict at the park, we see that sammy and dinah are pretty much not on good terms. ātell me,ā sammy shouts in hebrew to dinah in the park (tewfiq uncomprehending, confused and, i daresay, more than slightly agitated), āare you normal?ā¦what do i care how you feel? youāre the embarrassing one here!ā
oof. to say the least.
so it is apparent to the audience, even without the translation, that sammy is an antagonist in this story. but why, then, would this antagonist sing,Ā āin my dreams, my beloved lies beside me / when the sun lights the room, i find itās only meā in answer me?
it is confusing to take this line literally from this character in the context that we as the audience have. does he still harbor feelings for dinah? not likely, considering how willing he was to blow up in her face in front of her and her companion, in a language said companion would not understand.Ā
but hereās an idea - how about we abandon taking this line literally?
itās a pretty big given that one of the themes in tbv is that of loneliness and the subsequent desire for connection. āin my dreams, my beloved lies beside me,ā sammy sings. perhapsĀ āmy belovedā is not a person. perhapsĀ āmy belovedā is an idea of one. so many times, outside of this narrative, we hear of people lamenting their broken relationships with others, with an assertion thatĀ āi fell in love with the idea of them, not so much with them.ā maybeĀ āmy belovedā is the idea of someone who can fill the gap that loneliness leaves within a person, can fill the need and desire for connection.
maybe for sammy, the idea ofĀ āmy belovedā was, at one point, dinah.
but then what happened?
āwhen the sun lights the room, i find itās only me.ā the sun lit the room. something changed. (dare i say, something different came about?)
and now, the relationship between sammy and dinah is what we see in the musical.
however, sammy is not the only character singing this bridge. he takes the first half as a solo, but another voice joins for the second half - zelger.
now this is interesting for some reasons, and not necessarily good ones.
it has been put forth by, i believe, sharone (i donāt have the exact quote on me so i canāt link a source but i know i reblogged something about it awhile ago) that anna, her character, is a representation of dinah as a young woman. if that is true (and i have interpreted it correctly), perhaps zelger is a younger version of sammy. we see zelger and anna interacting quite passionately during the rink scene, and we can assume that this is zelgerās idea of an attempt to drain the moonlight, to end the dark, to do away with loneliness for a night, for a life.
perhaps, since he is joining sammy in this line, he is likely to become like sammy.
well, as dinah so put it,Ā āyou can see for miles, but it all stays the same.ā

Me, looking at The Bandās Visit fandom: so weāre really all gay for Katrina Lenk arenāt we? All seven of us.
The Winners of the 2018 Tony Awards
hi! how do i get into the bands visit?!?! should i watch the movie first?
my time has come!!!!
The Bandās Visit is about an Egyptian band that lands in the middle of nowhere because they got on the wrong bus and the local Israeli people take them in for the night. In the mean time, many separate stories are told as the band and the locals interact.
The full soundtrack is on youtube here
I have some recommendations for songs to listen to because obviously people canāt just listen to entire soundtrack at one sitting. If you just want to listen to one or two before delving in, try this guide I made upĀ
If you like cool new orchestrations like Hadestown or Great CometĀ
The Concert
If you like comedic shows like Something Rotten etc. and think The Bandās Visit is too serious to enjoy
Papi Hears the Ocean
If youāre all about the multilayered harmonies seemingly from heaven
Answer Me
If you watched Indecent and youāre gay asf for Katrina Lenk
Something Different
If you like artsy poetic lyrics like Spring Awakening
Omar Sharif
If you like classical broadway and smooth voices like Gavin Creel or Josh Groban
Haledās Song About Love
If youāre in a moment in your life where you feel lost and singĀ āWhen Will My Life Beginā all the time
Waiting
If you like to listen to music that tells a specific story but is also really danceable
The Beat of Your Heart
If you like to sing different characterās voices and verses in a song like Hamilton
Welcome to Nowhere
If you like music to dream to like āA Soft Place to Landā
Iztikās Lullaby
If youāre looking for positive representation of Middle Eastern culture and characters
Itgaraāa
This show is amazing and like I said, positive representation of Middle Eastern cultures, AND Arabic/Israeli people are actually cast in the roles unlike other bway shows š Itās told in Arabic, Yiddish, and English. Thereās a video boot but its NFT and will get out eventually. You donāt need to watch the movie to understand it.Ā
The reviews for this show are overwhelmingly positive and it won Best Musical of 2017 4x!!! This show is really important to me so if you have any other questions let me know! :D
Note: I understand youtube music isnāt visible in all countries but itās also on spotify and apple music! This is why I also put the songās name under the recommendation.Ā
Video of rehearsal for the DC production of Chess
FeaturingĀ RaĆŗl Esparza (Freddie), Ramin Karimloo (Anatoly), Ruthie Ann Miles (Svetlana), Karen Olivo (Florence), Bradley Dean (Molokov) Sean Allan Krill (Walter), and Bryce Pinkham (Arbiter)
I spliced together the videos from Broadway.com, BWW and TheatreMania, cause they all included different bits.

avenue q current cast contentā¢ļø
okay i just caught the current cast of avenue q off broadway two days ago and they were STELLAR all together and they need some love so iām linking this past yearās broadway in bryant park videos so yaāll get a chance to see them a bit. (i had two understudies who were absolutely amazing as well, zonya love was on for gary and michael liscio jr was on for brian!)
the more you ruv someone
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gaPGh_Vu9Ms
(grace choiās vocal POWER and acting skills are crazy in this one, and all her transitions in and out of her belt and mix are flawless. she is truly a perfect christmas eve, her voice was jaw droppingly amazing and she was RIDIDULOUSLY funny. brought out the right balance of anger and tenderness with every line. plus her and the understudy brian were comic fire together, iād like to see how she plays off of the main brian, nicholas kohn.)
if you were gay
https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=46s&v=1KebP43Ref8
(the incomprable jason jacoby is currently doing nicky/trekkie, and heās absolutely amazing as usual (he has LOTS of experience with this role, check out avenue qās broadway talks at google for more on that), plus he and his second-hander, kerri brackin, are legendary together. ALSO!! canāt forget ben durocher, who is like a young john tartaglia as rod/princeton and left me cackling with every little character mannerism of his track.)
thereās a fine fine line
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xRiQbz40wHM
(woah. dana steingold is a POWERHOUSE as kate/lucy and kinda sorta a personal inspiration of mine. her character voices for both are very well done, giving her own flavor to each role. she really understands both roles and stops the show with this song. iād say sheās probably my favorite kate/lucy, maybe tied with veronica kuehn)
(BONUS!!)
purpose
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dyiASnEOVNk
(this is NOT from bway in bryant park, but from a production directed by rick lyon back in 2012. ben durocher played princeton/rod in this before he joined the off-bway cast (this is also where jason jacoby first did nicky/trekkie) and i think itās a pretty good example of his characterization of princeton. i loved him in this role so so so much that i had to dig for an example of him playing it to show yaāll)
