Solas is such an asshole. I don't know which word suits him better. On the surface, he's truly noble and well-read, he strives to help the weak, and he gets triggered by slavery and when spirits are prevented from existing peacefully in the Fade. But — only as long as it doesn't interfere with his plans.
I still feel sorry for Felassan, his loyal follower and, I think, friend. Solas didn't like modern elves because they twisted elven history and worship things they know nothing about. It frustrated him and consumed him to the point where he became obsessed with the idea of restoring ancient Elvhenan — even at the cost of the current world. Felassan, during his missions, often encountered city elves and the Dalish, and he realized they were different — not lost, not terrible. He wanted to give them a chance and leave them alone. For that, Solas simply... killed him. And that's always how Solas operates. He kills Varric regardless of whether we try to negotiate through words or through a fight. If someone gets in Solas's way — they're dead.
I love one piece of lore about Solas from the game, which describes him with absolute clarity:
«The people of one village asked the god Fen'Harel to kill a huge beast. He came to the beast at dawn, saw its strength, and realized he would die if he faced it directly. So instead of fighting, he shot his arrow into the sky. The villagers asked him how he would save them, and he replied: 'When did I say I would save you?' Then he left. That night, the beast came to the village and killed the warriors, the women, and the elders. It reached the children and was about to open its enormous jaws — but then the arrow that Fen'Harel had shot fell from the sky straight into the monster's mouth and killed it. The village children mourned their parents, yet still praised Fen'Harel, for he had done what they asked: he killed the beast. Through his cunning and the slow arrow the beast never even noticed.»
I don't know if it was the blind worship of the Evanuris back in Arlathan's time, or Solas's charisma — though probably the latter. But everyone believed him, no matter how terribly he acted. Solas can justify himself with almost blinding eloquence. The Evanuris believed him, even though he fought against them for so long. Even the Forgotten Ones — who were cast down from power when the Evanuris arrived — believed him. And that's exactly why Solas outplayed everyone and eventually imprisoned them. Solas is clearly not a positive, good character. But his mastery of words — that's truly impressive.
But what I feel worse about are the ancient elves. They followed Solas to stop being slaves to the Evanuris. But in the end, most of them died for Solas's plans and his idea of 'freedom.' And the surviving elves — regardless of which side they were on, Solas's or the Evanuris — got their freedom, yes. But they lost their immortality. And ultimately, they ended up enslaved by humans, with their culture literally erased through that slavery. Solas kept his promise — he freed the elves from slavery to the Evanuris — but look at how, and at what cost. It really can be said of him that he would walk over corpses to achieve his goal. Even if the goals and motives seem noble, his actions are far from noble.
Oh, and yes. I still love this character like crazy. Maybe precisely because of all this
