author’s note: So I’ve seen a lot of fics of Bucky waking up as the winter soldier after a nightmare, but I was curious… what happens if he wakes up as a different version of himself?

Sometimes, what ripped you from your sleep in the early hours of the morning, while the sun hung below the tree, wasn’t the kind of paralyzing, heart-wrenching scream that could tear through you like a knife. It wasn’t always sprinting down the hall at two in the morning or violent shaking, evading swinging fists and broken table lamps.

The mirror hadn’t been kind to you lately, nor have the thoughts ruminating through the back of your mind every time you accidentally caught a glimpse of yourself in its reflection. Mood instantly brought down by what you’d see, reminding yourself that the picture in your mind was not was the world saw when they looked at you.

Too soft curves that didn’t fall flat on toned muscle. A jiggle of skin when you walked, some hanging at your bicep when you lifted your arms. Thighs that rubbed together, causing redness and burning at the skin. Too much space taken up in the subway, constantly trying to hold yourself in. Suck in your stomach. Move out of people’s way so they wouldn’t notice you. The faded reflection of the window would catch your eye and you’d evert your gaze.

Bucky rarely got a moment alone. His presence in the tower seemed to act as a magnet, drawing in hesitant, concerned glances and gentle prodding of ‘how you doin’ today, Buck?’ and ‘did you sleep alright?’

Not tonight. Tonight, Bucky sat alone in the dimly lit living room, propped up on the floor with his back pressed against the leg of a couch. He had started the night sitting atop the cushioning but found that he couldn’t stand how soft it was, almost like he was sinking. He had grown accustomed to the harder surfaces, it seemed.

The rest of the team had gone out to McGinny’s to celebrate the engagement of some SHIELD agent Bucky didn’t know the name of. Steve had all but begged him to come along. He had almost given when you had brushed your hand against his shoulder, telling him ‘it won’t be the same without you, Buck,’ before you nodded softly with that sweet smile of yours, giving him the permission he needed to have just a few moments to himself. He wanted to thank you, for noticing the anxiety that had settled in him the moment Steve brought it up, but all he could muster was a tight-lipped smile before he stalked off to his room to find the book Sam had lent him a few days back.

There were only a few pages left in his book when he heard the distant ding of the elevator pulling to a stop on his floor. Loud giggling followed as the doors slid open. Bucky froze, immediately recognizing the laugh as yours. He set his book at his side; his page long forgotten as he turned around the edge of the couch.

Draped against Sam’s arm, you were stumbling on your feet, knees wobbling as another burst of laughter echoed through the hall. You were without the nude heels you had left in a few hours earlier, the thin strap of your top fallen over your shoulder. Sam was doing his best to keep you upright, but he was swaying all on his own.

Your eyes lit up and suddenly Bucky realized he was standing as you took notice of him, arms reaching out in his direction though it nearly threw you off balance. “Bucky!”

summary: When a hydra agent finds a way to hack into FRIDAY’s system to trigger Bucky into the winter soldier, he nearly kills you. In the aftermath, he can’t begin to find a way to forgive himself. Not without your help.

author’s note: So this is my first time writing for bucky and naturally I go for the angst/comfort fic bc thats where my twisted soul is happiest. I’d love to hear what you thought if you read it! 

Your back slammed heavy against the floor of the ring. It was the third time in as many minutes that you’d been thrown off your feet. You huffed the hair from your eyes, pursing your lips in a frown as you stared up at the man responsible for the current ache pulsing through your shoulders. Bucky shook his head, chuckling as dark hair swayed over his eyes.

“You’re getting soft, doll.”

“It’s an off day,” you grumbled. “You try sparring with a super solider the day after getting back from a month-long mission in Guatemala.”

“Excuses, excuses.”

Bucky turned his back to you as he reached for the water bottle sitting on the edge of the ring. His first mistake. You flipped onto your stomach, crawling along the mat until he stood close enough for you to swing your leg hard against the back of his knees, sending him tumbling to the floor. He let out a grunt at the impact. Hands grappled at his wrists, pushing them out to his sides and against the mat as your left leg swung over his waist to straddle him down.

He pushed up against you, but you dug your right knee into his hip bone and forced his arms back down. Bucky groaned, letting his head fall against the mat as he rolled his eyes.

“Wanna call me soft again, sweetheart?”

A bead of sweat dripped off the end of the baby hairs framing your face and fell against the floor next to Bucky’s head. He didn’t flinch, not even to tug at his wrists you kept bound against the mat. He could have escaped you easier than you’d admit with the strength of the serum running through his veins, but he stayed down. You raised an eyebrow at him, suspicious that he hadn’t tossed you off yet. A grin pulled at his lips, his eyes narrowing as they trailed over your face and down to where you sat against his waist.

“Not sure yet,” he said through a heavy breath. “Kinda like where it got me.”
