Two paper-wrapped packages, tied with blue ribbon, wound up at Karthe's stoop. One flat but long, the other small but fat. A little tag was tied to the ribbon, to make its sender clearly visible. Almost like it's recipient had been mailbombed or something before. Amelia's name, sure enough, was printed in obnoxious red block letters.
The smallest package was heavy, and distinctly labelled 'birthday'. When it was opened, it was... Nothing special. Brass and silver baubles and trinkets. A small collection of otherwise worthless items. Among it's number was a fountain pen, a compass, a horse-shaped paperweight, several gears, and a variety of pretty but seemingly random trinkets.
The larger box was clearly labelled 'Winter Veil', and it was pretty clear what it was when it was picked up. Clothing of some sort. Sure enough, removing the lid revealed a note on top, a pair of gaudy holiday socks, and a deep blue knit sweater.
"Happy birthday! And happy Winter's Veil. You should audition to be an understudy for Greatfather Winter. Anyway, I know it sucks to have people conflate your birthday with the holiday, so I was sure to get something for both.
Your birthday gift is a box of shit. Alvareaux wanted me to try enchanting, but I hate it with every fibre of my being. But I know you don't, so... A box of doodads to enchant however you want. Your holiday gift is obvious, so if you're confused, I can't help you. Anyway, thank you for being my friend, and thank you for nudging me into the arcane. It all means more than you know.
The socks really were ugly. Just hideous. Stitched Greatfather Winter rode his sleigh across the top of the foot, pom-pom lights wrapped around the sock's opening, and an array of gnomes commuting workplace safety violations helped string them. The sweater, however, was very, very soft.
