The Rise of Skywalker Review
This post will have SPOILERS!!! Please stop reading if you wish to keep things a surprise!
Firstly let me start by saying I ABSOLUTELY HATE JJ ABRAMS NOW. Ben Solo deserved so much more. That was not a âhopefulâ or âsatisfyingâ ending by any means! Ben got redeemed, didnât even get to say anything to Rey upon his redemption, and then died moments after kissing her. What kind of lazy script-writing is this?? Theyfollowed the same old âredemption equals deathâ narrative which is just a cop-out so they donât have to write a happy ending for someone who actually struggled and turned their life around. The Skywalker saga came to an end by killing off all the Skywalkers. They all fought for each other, and continually tried to save each other and in the end it didnât matter. All of them died. Nobody got to have that happy family life, and now it feels like every single Skywalker life was a complete waste of time. None of them lived happily ever after. They were dealt pain, manipulation, and grief. With Ben dying, weâre just supposed to accept this as the Skywalker legacy. They were all failures, the end!
Secondly, Finn. Donât even get me started on Finn. Heâs gotta weirdly have tabs on Rey at all times and you know he was probably about to tell her some BS thing like âIâve always loved you.â And thank goodness he never got the words out because I wouldâve cringed so hard. Finn has been weirdly infatuated with Rey since the moment he met her and Iâve always thought it was weird. I felt like TLJ fixed it a little but then he went back to being a creepy stalker. Also, heâs force-sensitive? Since when? Thatâs such a random thing to do in the last twenty minutes of the movie. JJ basically gave us a âoh, by the way, Finn is force-sensitive. Not that it matters because youâll never see him become a Jedi.â What a random thing to throw in there.
Thirdly, Rey is off daydreaming in her own world for most of the movie and it made me so irritated. I gotta walk out in the dessert and destroy Benâs ship, I gotta take a skimmer to the Death Star wreckage, I gotta go get the dagger, I gotta hop in Benâs ship and fly my OP ass to Ach To to set Benâs ship on fire because Iâve had a bad day! Every two seconds sheâs doing something new thatâs way too entirely OP, and where the heck did she learn this stuff from? Like, SERIOUSLY. Where did she learn these overpowered abilities!? Every Jedi before her actually had to TRAIN. We see her train with Leia, but letâs be honest, how much would Leia actually know? We know she didnât train long with Luke. We see her use the force ONE TIME throughout six movies. But Rey is somehow just SOOOO powerful she can Force-heal, sense where random objects are, force-pull an entire ship back to the ground, Oh, and use EFFIN LIGHTNING. REY SKYWALKER? More like MaRey Suewalker.
Lastly, Adam Drivers acting is just way beyond anyone elseâs in the movie. Not saying the others are necessarily bad. Theyâre bad because of the way their character is written. Ben Solo was a fan favorite because his story was so complex and he plays the conflicted soul SO well. You can tell from the first MOMENT he meets Rey he feels something. Something he continually wants to deny but canât. Adam Driver made you FEEL that, and in the end his character got screwed over. Adam Driver is such a good actor that in the end scenes, he says enough with his emotions and facial expression but what was up with him having zero lines? He said absolutely nothing to Rey and still achieved great things. He looked distraught when he cradled Reyâs dead body. I canât say the same when Rey watched Ben lay down and die while taking my shredded heart with him. Seriously! The man grinned so hard after that kiss and then died and a few scenes later, Rey is flying off with a smile on her face!!?? Like, excuse me?? The love of your life JUST DIED, WOMAN! CAN YOU PLEASE SHED A TEAR OR SOMETHING?!??
In conclusion, I hate JJ Abrams. The Skywalkers didnât rise. Ben Solo died and Palpatine basically won be eliminating all of them and the message of the film is that none of them shouldâve existed in the first place. Wow, what a powerful message. Rey just decides to take their name for no reason and ends up ALONE. In the DESSERT. With still nobody to belong to. What a heaping pile of hot trash. Congrats, JJ, you ruined every single Star Wars movie with your limited imagination and lazy script-writing.
EDT: I forgot to add that the whole theme of them being âequalsâ in the force, and the whole idea of them balancing each other out was completely disregarded since one of them died. Makes no sense.
