Picking another at random, David Loveless was arrested for "threatening two detective through gestures", which was completely bogus, but it's pretty clear they didn't think it was a gun.

MAY 30 - On this day in 1431, 592 years ago, St Jeanne D’Arc (la Pucelle, the Maid of Orléans) was martyred in Rouen, France. She was burned at the stake as punishment for being found guilty of relapsed heresy and cross-dressing. Joan’s judge was Pierre Cauchon, the Bishop of Beauvais, who was sympathetic to the English forces Jeanne opposed in the Hundred-Years War. Her trial is the most well-documented legal event in medieval history.  Before being burned alive, Joan requested that a crucifix be held up above the crowd so that she could see the cross as she died. Allegedly, after her remains were set on fire three more times to destroy any possible relics, her heart refused to burn. In 1920, upon her canonisation, May 30 was declared the feast day of Saint Joan.
