Is Spoke truly becoming evil? — character deep dive/analysis
In the recent video (‘1000 Players Build END Civilization...’) we can encounter the quite ‘new’ side of Spoke personality — more cruel and power hungry. People start to call him evil and worse than Jamato or Ashswag (or that Spoke is just proving Ash’s point). However I think that many of these people don't really understand why Spoke is doing what he is doing, so let me try to explain it.
(This is only my opinion of what could be going inside of Spoke’s mind. Everyone can have other conclusions and that’s fine.) Also this is only like a part one or smth (not everything is included here...)
Spoke always seemed to be a really desperate person for me, yet this desperation only came out in situations where his obsession was interrupted by something and he felt like he was losing control. That is exactly what the victory over Jamato gave him — the feeling that he regained his control. That is because Jamato had put him in some many situations where he had nothing that taking everything from Jamato was the only thing that could make him feel in control again. Not powerful exactly, because Spoke doesn't care about power, he doesn't even care that much about material stuff. He cares about his own influence over things, that he still is important and his presence can affect the outcome of the situation he is in (or of other people’s decisions). This is why he got his hands on the Totem of Null. He doesn't need the Totem to be powerful and strong, he needs it to feel that he has control over something again.
Oh, but that doesn't mean that he has to kill other innocent players and take down entire server, you might say.
That is true, Spoke wasn't even that ‘cruel’ back before Purgatory, you might also say. Yet, if you didn't notice yet, Spoke is unpredictable. To narrow the field of terms, he is morally unpredictable. It seems like he has his own morals, he sets up boundaries for himself, yet at the same time he is the one who crosses his own lines. He pushes himself to do things that his past self wouldn't do because he feels like he doesn't have another choice. His mind is full of every possible scenario of ‘what if’ and it forces him to take action because otherwise his fear of what might happen if he doesn't take control of the situation is too big. He tries to adapt to whatever is happening in his life because if he doesn't than he is being left behind and he can't let himself lose the control of his own life. That is why he starts doing things that are morally questionable, because otherwise he feels stuck and out of control. Just to clarify, control in his mind is linked to the action, what means that if he takes action by himself than he is also gaining control over something at the same time.
Another thing are his surroundings — Spoke has been put into an actual psychological torture by Jamato. I don't think how many of people realise how much the things that Spoke survived in the Purgatory can affect the psyche of a person. Spoke has lost everything back then — all of his stuff that he had, but also all his relationships and to Spoke the relationships are the second most important thing. Spoke is feeding off the feeling that someone needs him because that means that he has control over something. That also means that the lost of Mapicc and other his friendships had a severe impact on him. But there is also the example of how his desperation works — in the situation where he feels like he lost everything, he doesn't lose hope. It actually works in the opposite way for him — he tries to cling to the hope that was left in him that much that he is willing to do anything for it to prove that this spark of hope has a meaning (also an example for this is when Mapicc had disappeared and he wanted to blow up the Capital City). The Purgatory showed him that this place is merciless and will take anything from him if he doesn't take any action. Hunger Games that Jamato hosted were the culmination of it because Spoke has been put between two options — either be cruel and have a chance of surviving or never have this chance again. So obviously he chose the first option because he felt obligated to change the situation (kind of mindset ‘who if not me’ but more self-destructive and selfish (wait, that actually can be a good comparison to Parrot’s mindset, might do that one)). That is when he had to push his own boundaries to achieve something greater — the freedom. Not only his, but his friends and other's.
When he finally got his hands on the Totem of Null, that means the only thing he needed to be above Jamato, he felt superior. He felt like all the suffering he has endured, all his own actions that were done against him, all the sacrifices, weren't for nothing, but actually served their purpose and even if he felt guilty about some of them, this guilt was pushed behind because he couldn't doubt his own actions, not when he has done so much and he manage to reach his goal (it is like the result of something wasn't satisfying but you had spent a really lot of time and effort on it so you just force yourself to like it anyway). Instead he focuses on other things — the fact that he finally regained his control and even better; he managed to expand it.
The Totem of Null is the symbol of control — it doesn't only means that he has all the Null soldiers under his command, it also means that they are dependent on him. That they need Spoke at some point. This also fills the feeling of guilt in his mind after losing Mapicc because originally Mapicc was the person that Spoke was feeding off the control and dependency, but now this hole of lack of relationship is filled by the Null. Now Spoke is needed by the Null (not Mapicc). This is also very insecure type of thinking because it hints at manipulation, yet it's usually just sad; the need of always having someone who needs you because otherwise you feel meaningless. It is self-destructive and always ends up in either one side or each side being hurt. This is also why Spoke might act this ‘evil’. He isn't really evil, not in his head (because this type of person will always justify their doings because in their head they make sense, but to others it just looks like they're being evil (the trope of ‘the end justifies the means’)). Yet I also don't entirely think that Spoke feels like he's going the right way, I think he feels like he needs to go this way because otherwise everything he has done would be for nothing and he cannot let himself accept that he was not needed, that this could have been prevented, that he was in the wrong. However now his actions are not only fueled by what is happening in his own head, but also by what is on the outside — of what Null is. They're his main focus now and he feels like he can't let them down because that would mean that he isn't strong enough and that all he has proven in the Purgatory wasn't true.
Some people assume that the Totem has some kind of control over Spoke because he is being cruel while holding it, yet I don't think that's exactly the case. Spoke holds it all the time because he thinks that it ensures his influence. He wants to be the one who has total control over everything because he can't let himself be this low like he was in the Purgatory ever again. Yet this also makes him more desperate and emotionally unstable (say that again.). He is making reckless decisions and showing his impulsive side (when he was searching for ender crystals, he basically acted like a kid that got a tantrum), what doesn't serve him any good. He is just showing to the Null that he is incompetent, that he doesn't hold any real power and he can be easily overpowered (the fight with Minute, the parkour for the end crystal, the lost of his mace). This makes him angry and more desperate because every time it just proves what he fears the most — that he still, after all, lacks control over situation. He tries to fill up this sense of lack with brut force, destroying civilizations and players. This way he feels like he have some influence and he is not losing the race he has in his own head, but also — the standards that Null sets up for him. Null needs strong and competent leader and if Spoke isn't then he has to become a one. He is insecure about his own worthiness, he is the one who always depends on something or someone, he is the one who lacks, that's why he tries so desperately to invert those feelings and force them on the outside world.
/ This is the first time I analysed Spoke and I feel like I said nothing about him. He is so complex and interesting that I could write for hours about him. Also thank you if you read it, I really appreciate it!
to be honest i don’t get people who say that spoke was being cruel by destroying jamato’s books. in my opinion what jamato put spoke through was way more intense and extreme, alike to psychological torture. i don’t really think that jamato is worse than spoke, because they are both the same (literally two sides of the same coin...), yet jamato’s plan about spoke’s torture was way more complex and emotional (though of course the type of torture depends on the persons priorities, that’s also why both of them went through something different). however that is why i don’t think spoke doings are wrong or entirely ‘evil’.
